Key Findings from the 2024 State of Dry Eye Survey:
Dry eye impacts quality of life.
Three in four dry eye sufferers (75%) find it extremely or very bothersome, with three in 10 saying that their symptoms have worsened over time (31%).
And make it difficult to enjoy day-to-day activities.
Most dry eye sufferers (67%) had to give up or cut back on something to relieve symptoms, including screen time (32%), spending time outdoors (25%) and wearing makeup (24%).
Dry eye sufferers report their symptoms have the biggest impact on reading (45%), device use (35%) and driving (31%).
Despite this, most Americans don’t know much about dry eye, what to do about it or that their symptoms may be associated with dry eye.
Around two in five Americans (43%) don’t routinely (i.e., at least once a year) see an eye doctor, even though it’s the primary way to get evaluated.
Most respondents (66%) don’t know that symptoms of dry eyes are increasingly present in younger people, which is likely the result of today’s modern lifestyles, including increased screen time.
If left untreated, dry eye may get worse and progress to dry eye disease, potentially impacting eye health and vision.
More than two in five (44%) of respondents don’t know that untreated dry eye can lead to other eye problems and even vision loss.

Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) causes sudden loss of vision in one eye. This happens when blood flow to the optic nerve is blocked.
Semaglutide (Ozempic) was approved by the FDA in December 2017 to treat type 2 diabetes (T2D) and in December 2022 to treat obesity (Wegovy). This observational study suggests that there may be an association between these medications and an increased risk of NAION. Further research is needed to explore this. I know what you’re thinking... MORE recalls?! There have been several eye drop/ointment recalls over the past year. The most important thing is that if you think your eye medication is affected, talk to your doctor. Do NOT just stop taking prescribed medications without discussing it first. The bottom line for artificial tears at this point is avoid store brands and stick with well known brands. Stay safe.

These drops are trying to mimic Lumify eye drops. Beware and make sure you only use Lumify brand and not these copy cats. So many issues with eye drops lately. Pro tip is to ask your eye doctor if you’re worried your eye drops are affected by any FDA recall. Stay safe!
Regular eye exams are so important for eye health prevention. One of the main reasons we recommend getting dilated exams regularly starting at age 40 is to pick up on eye disease, such as glaucoma. The most common form of glaucoma typically does not cause any symptoms until there is significant permanent vision loss. Early diagnosis can usually prevent loss of vision. Call for an appointment 248-546-2133.
LASIK is FDA approved for a certain range of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
To have LASIK surgery, you need to meet certain requirements. Here are some of them:
You should be 18 years or older (ideally, over 21 years old, when vision is more likely to have stopped changing).
Your eye prescription should not have changed much in the last year.
Your refractive error must be one that can be treated with LASIK.
Your corneas need to be thick enough and healthy, and your overall eye health must be generally good.
You need to have realistic expectations about what LASIK can and cannot do for you.
Call for a consultation today to see if LASIK is right for you. ☎️ 248-546-2133.

Eye drops are getting a bad rap lately. There have been several recent artificial tear eye drop recalls recently. It mainly affects store brands. I encourage anyone who is using eye drops and thinks they may be affected by a recent recall to call and speak with your doctor. I do not recommend stopping any prescription eye drops without first discussing this with your eye doctor. We are here to help! Some of my favorite artificial tear drop brands that are safe: Refresh, Systane, Optase, Blink, Retaine, Ivizia.
Don’t buy kids’ toys that can shoot anything… unless you want to end up at the ER. Don’t let an eye injury ruin your child’s holiday season. Stay away from projectile toys, or include proper eye protection. Happy gifting!
