When interacting with someone who has experienced trauma, it’s crucial to be compassionate and avoid inadvertently causing further harm. Here are some things you should never say to a traumatized person:

“It’s in the past.”: Instead, reassure them by saying, “You’re safe now.” Feeling safe is essential for trauma recovery, even if the traumatic experiences occurred in the past.
“You need to talk about it.”: Rather, offer your support by saying, “I’m here to listen if you need to talk.” Not all survivors find talking about their experiences helpful, and some rely on other healing mechanisms.
“Things will get better.”: Instead, acknowledge their pain by saying, “I see/hear that you’re in pain.” Validating their emotions creates a safe space for them to express how they feel.
“You should give them another chance.”: Respect their boundaries by saying, “I respect your need for boundaries.” Understand that repairing relationships with offenders may not be safe or feasible for the survivor.
“It’s time to move on.”: Instead, express your support by saying, “I’m here for you.” Avoid pressuring them to move forward; let them heal at their own pace.
