November 1880
The Late Arthur D. Phelps
On Sunday last, Arthur D. Phelps, the youngest son of the late Sherman D. Phelps, expired at the family mansion on Court Street. For the past year he has suffered from impaired health, and about six weeks ago the symptoms assumed dangerous form, developing into malignant spinal meningitis. The patient bore up bravely under the ravages of this horrible malady, and no word of complaint escaped from his lips during his long and painful illness. When he was informed, he could not survive, he received the announcement with composure and said he was fully prepared for the final change.
He had just attained his twenty-first year when he was stricken down.
The funeral of the deceased took place Wednesday afternoon, and, in conformance with his wishes, was of a private character. While the body lay in state a very large number of the deceased's friends called to look upon the remains of one esteemed for his manly
traits and generous impulses and who was incapable of an unmanly action. The face bore a tranquil expression, as one in peaceful slumber. The obsequies were conducted by Rev.
Mr. McVey of the Presbyterian Church, who pronounced a feeling discourse upon the occasion. The pall bears, relatives of the deceased, were Norman A. Phelps, Dr. Henry O. Ely, W.G. Phelps, James B. Hunt, H. B. Phelps and John C. Phelps. The internment was
made in the family plot in Spring Forest Cemetery.
Happy Halloween from all of us at the Phelps Mansion Museum.
