Registration is open for the ACTT Workshop at the Black Maternal Health Expo.

Created by the Black Coalition for Safe Motherhood the ACTT workshop is specifically designed to empower Black women to advocate for themselves in healthcare settings. Led by JaShelle Nix of Birthwell Partners, participants will practice speaking to medical professionals and staff to get the care they need and prefer.

The workshop is free to attend and will be held in a private breakout room during the expo from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM.

BirthWell Partners has just wrapped up our 13th year of operation as of June 30th, and we're excited to share some incredible milestones with you! 🎉

This past year, we served the largest number of families ever! Our amazing doulas attended the births of 122 babies, including two sets of twins. Along with our childbirth classes and support groups, we are proud to be part of so many beautiful birth stories.

Check out these stats:

- BirthWell clients had a 24.6% C-section rate, compared to Alabama's state rate of 35%.
- Only 5.79% of BirthWell clients’ babies were born preterm, versus Alabama's 12.8% rate in 2022.
- An incredible 94% of our clients fed their babies breastmilk!

A concerning statistic is the induction rate. Nearly 45% of BirthWell clients had their labors induced. If you're pregnant, it's likely you'll discuss scheduling your baby's birth with your doctor. Do you fully understand what an induction involves? Do you know the benefits and risks? A doula can be a valuable resource to help you make an informed decision for yourself, your baby, and your family.

Expecting a new grandchild? A lot has probably changed since you were a new parent! This class will help you get up to speed with current information about hospital labor & delivery procedures, newborn sleep & feeding, as well as prepare you to take care of your child as they recover from giving birth. Premature birth can affect the immune system, metabolism, gastrointestinal tract, and heart. March of Dimes classifies preterm as being born before your 37th week of pregnancy. A recent study revealed that having a doula can actually reduce the likelihood of having a preterm birth (Kozhimannil et al., 2016). One possible reason for this could be that the physical and emotional support doulas offer reduces maternal stress, which is an associated factor in preterm birth.
