Barbara Thompson, 52, has a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. Recently, worsening symptoms and shortness of breath signaled the need for a change in her treatment plan. Starting Bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) therapy was a key step in managing her condition.

Respiratory therapy rehabilitation is helping Barbara adapt to her new treatment. Her program includes physical therapy to improve fitness and lung function, with exercises designed to strengthen her breathing muscles and increase her endurance.

Following spinal surgery, Verlene Davis recognized her need for specialized care, and turned to Encompass Health Lakeshore.

At Encompass Health, Verlene had access to a dedicated team focused on helping her regain strength, mobility, and independence. Physical therapy played a key role in rebuilding her core and lower body strength, essential for supporting her spine and improving stability. Therapists worked to restore her range of motion and reduce pain, enabling her to safely regain mobility.

Occupational therapy was equally crucial in her recovery. Given the impact of her surgeries on daily activities, therapist guided her on safely performing tasks like dressing and bathing while minimizing strain on her spine.

Michael, who graduated from Southern Union State Community College in Opelika, Alabama, found his calling in nursing at the suggestion of his mother, who recognized his caring personality. With nearly a decade of experience at Encompass Health, Michael has shared countless positive moments with patients. His commitment to his job and support for his colleagues are evident in his hope to continue working here for the next 20 plus years.

Outside of work, Michael enjoys spending time with his dog, Pennie, a Beagle-Dachshund mix, and is excited to welcome a new Havanese puppy, Poppy, into his home.

Following a hospital stay, Martha Uptain was transferred to Encompass Health Lakeshore. She told the doctor there that she had been experiencing dizziness and fainting for the past 10 years. “My regular doctor didn’t help me at all. He told me I would have to live with it and get used to life in a wheelchair,” Martha said.

With tears of joy, she added, “Encompass Health has done more for me than my own doctor ever did. My doctor here has helped me understand and manage my dizziness and fainting. I can’t thank everyone enough. They’ve given me my life back, and now I’m full of hope.”

Martha also praised Stephanie, her nurse tech. “She goes above and beyond to take care of me, and while everyone here made my stay amazing, Stephanie really stood out,” she said.

Vicky Roper, a 57-year-old mother and wife, was admitted to Encompass Health Lakeshore following multiple falls. Within the first week of her stay, Vicky showed remarkable improvement through various exercises, including standing and walking with the help of a walker. These exercises have been crucial for building her strength, balance, and coordination, targeting specific muscle groups important for her recovery.

Additionally, our dietitian provided Vicky with specially designed meals to ensure she receives the nutrients needed for enhanced health and energy during rehabilitation.

Vicky's goal is to regain her independence. She is steadily gaining strength and values her physical well-being. “I am so grateful for my therapy team, Olivia and Bethany. They push me to be a better version of myself, and their encouragement is enough to make me try harder every day. It’s because of their positive attitude that I feel as if I will be able to continue to improve,” she says with a smile.

Willie Gipson faced muscle weakness and coordination issues after amputation surgery. Fortunately, the care and therapy he received at Encompass Health Lakeshore helped him regain strength, especially when his prosthetic leg arrived during his stay.

Our wound care nurses carefully monitored his surgical site to prevent infections, while our patient care nurses managed his pain, addressed phantom limb sensations, and prevented complications like pressure ulcers.

"All the teams pulled together to help me regain my mobility and balance. I’m so thankful to everyone for giving me my life back," Willie said.

Willie's life, though changed, is now full of potential, and he's embracing his new reality with renewed strength.

Every day, our ambulance drivers face the daunting task of quickly reaching patients in need. Don Farris, a 41-year-old emergency medical technician and volunteer firefighter, had a serious accident while on duty. Following a car accident, Don suffered broken ribs, a spine injury requiring surgery, and a broken leg. He was transferred to Encompass Health Lakeshore for recovery.

Don is amazed at his progress, sharing, "I'm already doing better in just two days." His wife, who has been by his side, believes that after saving so many lives, her husband deserves the best care. Their two young boys are proud of their dad, and Don looks forward to reuniting with his family at home.

The Farris family is grateful to the nurses and therapy team at the hospital for their kindness and support during Don's recovery.

Cissi Britt was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure and an irregular heartbeat. Cissi spent three weeks in the hospital before being moved to Encompass Health Lakeshore. With the help of her therapists, she regained strength and coordination. Cissi could barely walk, but by the time she was discharged, she was dancing with delight.

"You can't just sit in a bed for three weeks and not have any movement. My body became weaker because of it. I am so thankful for rehabilitation and Encompass Health," she shared

After a restrictive diet resulted in Jeffrey Jones' malnutrition, he passed out and sustained broken ribs. His prolonged dieting had left him nutrient-deficient, leading to further complications when his heart stopped, requiring resuscitation.

He arrived to Encompass Health Lakeshore unable to walk or move his hands, and required intensive therapy to help him regain strength and mobility. The nurses played a crucial role in Jeffrey’s recovery, by monitoring him to ensure he followed his care treatment plan.

Upon discharge, Jeffrey regained his independence, walking again and had full use of his hands. As a piano player, Jeffrey was ready to return to making music and committed to making healthier dietary choices in the future. This underscores the importance of rehabilitation and the dedicated care provided by our staff during the recovery process.

Corlynn Griffin, a 50-year-old breast cancer survivor, was referred to Encompass Health Lakeshore to address weakness in her legs and nerve damage.

With the help of her therapist, she began a structured rehabilitation plan tailored to help her regain strength. Corlynn walked eighty feet on her second day in therapy, with the help of a walker, and after a week, she successfully climbed stairs.

Corlynn exemplifies how rehabilitation therapy can significantly enhance the healing process through education and exercises that strengthen the body. Movement is medicine, and a body in motion is a body on the path to recovery. She is looking forward to returning to an active lifestyle as she puts her exercises to use for continued therapy from home.

After Rockey Fox experienced seizures and stroke symptoms, doctors discovered a golf ball-sized mass on his brain and promptly referred him to undergo surgeries for its removal. After surgery, he was referred to Encompass Health Lakeshore for an intensive rehabilitation program.

Rockey faced significant challenges, including balance issues and weakness. Living alone, he was concerned about regaining his independence.

With the support of his therapists, Rockey was able to use a walker by the end of his first day at Encompass Health. His progress continued steadily, and by the conclusion of his rehabilitation, he could walk independently and climb stairs with minimal assistance.

Rockey's story underscores the critical role of comprehensive rehabilitation, encompassing both physical therapy and dietary support, in recovering from significant medical events and regaining independence.

Joseph Giattina found his world turned upside down when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease which significantly affected his ability to perform even the simplest daily tasks. Chester Delaune, a 75-year-old patient, is currently grappling with multiple significant health issues including Mantle Cell Lymphoma, acute respiratory failure, and diabetes. He is actively participating in therapy under the guidance of a specialized physiatrist, who plays a crucial role in improving the patient's physical function and overall quality of life, especially given the complexity of his medical conditions.

Upon arrival, Chester was unable to walk; however, with the aid of a walker, he is now progressively enhancing his mobility and stability. Janice Fowler, a 72-year-old retired widow, underwent what was expected to be a routine, same-day hip replacement surgery. During the procedure, the doctors discovered two torn muscles that also required repair. Upon completing the surgery, Janice was referred to Encompass Health Lakeshore.

Looking forward to returning home, Janice expressed heartfelt gratitude towards her son. “My son is so wonderful,” she said proudly, “He took a week off of work just to help me. You don’t realize how much you take the little things for granted until they are gone. This experience has taught me to appreciate those things.”

Cornelius Davis, a 59-year-old employee at Encompass Health, was recovering from sepsis and chose the hospital he worked for because he trusted that he would receive the best care.

On the first day he arrived, Cornelius said, “I did more today than I have done in all of two weeks." After eight days of care, he was discharged home, preparing to get back to work. His goal was to gain strength and return to the job that he loves. He is very proud of the hospital and the care they provide. "I knew we had a good team just from working here. Now that I have been a patient, I can see it is a great team. I appreciate everything very much," shared Cornelius.

Randall Harris, a 79-year-old Air Force veteran, has been married for 58 years. Despite living with Type 2 diabetes and having already lost all the toes on his right foot, he remained vigilant about his health. When he noticed an issue with his left toe, accompanied by a fever and high blood sugar, he knew something was wrong. The doctors delivered the difficult news: he would need a below-the-knee amputation on his left leg. While his wife was devastated, Randall maintained an exceptional outlook, understanding that the amputation was necessary to prevent further complications from the infection.

Randall chose Encompass Health Lakeshore for his recovery. “The way they treat you at Encompass is better than anything I have experienced,” he shared. “I told my wife, the doctors know what to do, and nobody treats you better than the folks here at Lakeshore.”

He is deeply grateful for the entire staff that assisted him. Randall’s wound nurse helped monitor his surgical incision to ensure the skin integrity improved and to confirm there was evidence of wound healing. The nurses watched over his medications and took care of him, making sure his overall health was on track. Roger Ritchey admitted to our Altoona, Pennsylvania rehabilitation hospital after a month-long hospital stay. Prior to his illness, Roger was independent with walking and performing everyday tasks. His illness and extended hospital stay took its toll, though. He needed assistance to complete even the simplest of tasks when he came to us.

A grand opening was held on June 24 for Baptist Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. The 40-bed hospital is a joint venture between Encompass Health and Baptist Health. It is now open to patients!

“We are excited to celebrate the opening of our joint venture hospital with Baptist Health, with the unified goal of providing high-quality patient care to patients of the Louisville community,” said Troy Dedecker, president of Encompass Health’s Central region. “With our patients at the forefront of our minds, we have designed the hospital to accommodate all of their needs as they regain strength, function, hope and independence. Roy, an Army veteran, was admitted to our rehabilitation hospital in northwest Tucson, Arizona after a stroke which greatly impacted his ability to communicate. While at our hospital, he worked diligently on his speech and cognition. Jamie—our speech language pathologist—and others helped him with reading, speaking and identifying images by putting them into words. “He is tenacious and does not give up,” said his partner Barbara.

His goal was to get back home and to once again feel confident driving, wood working and more. We are so proud of the progress you have made, Roy. Thank you for trusting us with your care.
