Pierogi Fest® 07/16/2024

Today we are going to talk about Pierogis! Why, because the July 26-28th Pierogi Festival is coming up in Whiting, IN, see below for more information:

The origins of pierogis. Some say they are traditional Polish delights, and some say Russian or Ukrainian. Others say they come all the way from China. But we can all agree it is a versatile dish made with a small piece of dough with filling inside. They can be sweet or savory and steamed, boiled, deep-fried or baked. Many countries have their own versions of these delectable dishes. In Japan they are called gyoza, China they are dim sum, Ukraine they are called varenyky, Poland, Pierogi, and Italy they are called ravioli. Mexico has similar ones, and they are called empanadas. Original tales speculate they originated in China around the 13th century. Thousands of pierogis are consumed during Pierogi Festivals. But we can all agree, if you have tried one, there is a sweet or savory one for every one, and they are delicious!

Pierogi Fest® Held in Downtown Whiting, Pierogi Fest provides an annual opportunity for people to return to their roots, celebrate their heritage, and have a lot of fun. The incredible event draws more than 300,000 people from across the nation and the world. Numerous live music acts will be performing throughout...

I wanted to know more about Kimchi, a traditional Korean side dish made from salted and fermented vegetables. I learned that is it a staple in almost every Korean meal and that there are hundreds of variations. I read that it dates back to 918-1392 AD. Chili powder was only added around 300 years ago, so earlier versions were whiter and seasoned with salt. The dish continues to evolve. One can find it around the world for sale. It was originally made to preserve food for winter and stored in large earthenware containers underground. It started with radishes and then napa cabbage and garlic were introduced making it similar to sauerkraut. Variations of kimchi today can be served as a result of the season, meaning hot or cold versions. It is so popular now that it is paired with any dish, and it has health benefits as well. It is rich in vitamin A and can reduce food cravings and regulate the appetite. It also provides lots of probiotics detoxifying the body from toxins and boosts one's immune system. It sounds like a delicious and beneficial food for all!

And, many people around the world eat versions of our donuts. Here is an article on that, check it out!

12 Delicious Doughnuts From Around the World When most people think of doughnuts, they picture a ring of deep-fried dough with a hole in the middle—but depending on where you are in the world, these tasty treats have evolved into different shapes, sizes, and flavors altogether.

Geographically, Yemen is the smallest country where Arab is spoken. The population is 456 million people. Although Algeria has the smallest Arab speaking population of 907,000. But back to Yemen. Yemen is on the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. It is mountainous and generally arid. Due to its location, it has been at the crossroads of Africa, the Middle East and Asia for thousands of years. Today Yemen is known for its beautiful architecture, ancient history and civilization, frankincense and myrrh, Socotra, the enchanted island, coffee culture and art and craftsmanship.

May is a great time to visit Brazil. Because Brazil is in the southern hemisphere, it is cooler during the summer months than in the northern hemisphere. Beaches are less crowded, ideal for swimming and surfing. There are fewer festivals but also fewer tourists but there may be an increase in rain or at least varying weather conditions. Temperatures can range from 59-86 F across the North, Central and Southern Brazil.

It looks like snow but it is the beautiful cherry blossoms blooming in Korea in April! There are thousands of these trees distributing their gentle snow like petals across the country in April and they look most prominent in the capital. There are several festivals to celebrate in April, the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival, the Boseong Green Tea Culture Festival and the Taean Tulip Festival to name a few. It is a glorious time to be outside in Korea as the temperature warms and it isn't too hot.

I was thinking about Russian today and wondering about dialects and how many there might be? This is what I found on Wiki - Of all the languages of Russia, Russian, the most widely spoken language, is the only official language at the national level. There are 35 other official languages, which are used in different regions of Russia. These languages include Ossetic, Ukrainian, Buryat, Kalmyk, Chechen, Ingush, Abaza, Adyghe, Cherkess, Kabardian, Altai, Bashkir, Chuvash, Crimean Tatar, Karachay-Balkar, Khakas, Nogai, Tatar, Tuvan, Yakut, Erzya, Komi, Hill Mari, Meadow Mari, Moksha, and Udmurt. There are over 100 minority languages spoken in Russia today. Other sources suggest there are only 3 dialects; northern, southern and central. I guess when searching for information, one has to keep digging but either way, having one national language, I am certain most individuals understand one another speaking Russian. I did find this: Colloquialisms and vernacular expressions are easy giveaways, especially in villages and small towns and among older people. But these distinctions will never be as strong as in different regions of, say, Italy or even more so China. Except for a few odd words, all Russians understand each other.

Ramadan concludes with a 3-day festival known as “Eid” or “Eid Al-Fitr,” which literally means “the feast of the breaking/to break the fast.” The holiday marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting and is a culmination of the month-long struggle towards a higher spiritual state.

One may think how a foreign language can benefit me career wise. Here are some examples of careers where a language is necessary:

ESL teacher - primary duties: An English as a second language (ESL) teacher works in education and leads classes or lessons in the English language to people who speak other languages. ESL teachers can teach non-English speakers in English-speaking countries, abroad or online. They instruct students of all ages on grammar, vocabulary, writing, conversation and culture skills. Language majors can apply their knowledge of language arts, writing and culture to teach students.

Medical interpreter - primary duties: A medical interpreter works in health care and translates written or spoken information from a health care provider to a patient. They may convert written diagnosis notes, test results or other instructions, transcribe recorded notes, accompany a patient to an appointment, and translate what the provider says to the patient in their native or preferred language. Language majors can use their foreign language knowledge to work in a hospital, private practice or another health care facility to provide these services.

Copywriter - primary duties: A copywriter works in marketing and creates content like articles, blogs, social media copy, website information and product descriptions that promote a brand and encourage audience engagement. These professionals can work in many industries worldwide, and companies with international or diverse audiences, consumers or business partners can benefit from having bilingual copywriters on staff. Language majors can use their foreign language knowledge, writing skills, research skills and empathy to create engaging and compelling content.

Immigration paralegal - primary duties: An immigration paralegal works in the legal field to support an immigration lawyer by preparing documents and evidence for trial, conducting case research, interviewing clients and witnesses and monitoring important decisions in immigration law. Professionals with a language degree may more effectively communicate with clients who speak other languages, use their writing, speaking and research skills to help lawyers build the best cases and apply cultural sensitivity to best support clients.

Intelligence analyst - primary duties: An intelligence analyst is responsible for collecting, assessing and developing insights from information to improve security measures for an organization. Specific responsibilities may depend on the industry and organization in which they work. Still, these individuals typically monitor technology and other forms of digital communication, identify security breaches and flaws in security systems that could lead to them and make recommendations to improve overall security. With the need for keen research abilities, an in-depth understanding of communication and international fluency, intelligence analysts could benefit from pursuing a language major.

March 25th will begin the celebration of Holi! Holi is a Hindu festival that has been celebrated since ancient times. The Holi Festival is celebrated to welcome in spring and is seen as a new beginning where people can release all their inhibitions and start fresh. It is said that during the Holi Festival, the gods turn a blind eye, and it’s one of the few times extremely devout Hindus allow themselves to let loose. They enjoy each other’s company, take time to dance and party, and throw their cultural norms to the side. On the first day of the festival, a bonfire is lit to symbolically burn away all the bad and give way to a colorful and vibrant new future.
At the Holi Festival, participants throw powder dye into the air, covering all in attendance with vibrant colors. In a religious sense, the colors are rich with symbolism and have multiple meanings: they can mean a vibrant new life and even represent sin in a way. For some, washing off the dye at the end of the day can mean new commitment to live well, as cleansing oneself of evils and demons. The Holi Festival is primarily celebrated by Hindus. That said, the festival is a very inclusive, as one of the main themes of the festival is unity. So, while the Holi Festival is rooted in Hindu tradition, it is a celebration that happens all over the world. It brings people together and invites them to throw away their inhibitions, feeling united in one big colorful group.

We are still talking about Ramadan which won't end until April 8th, 2024. After sun sets, those who follow Ramadan will eat an Iftar meal. It is the main meal of the day for those who are fasting. The other meal of the day for those who are fasting is called Suhoor, which is eaten early in the morning before dawn.

03/06/2024

Ramadan begins on Sunday, March 10th this year. Ramadan, in Islam, is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and the holy month of fasting. Although ṣawm (to refrain in Arabic) is most commonly understood as the obligation to fast during Ramadan, it is more broadly interpreted as the obligation to refrain between dawn and dusk from food, drink, sexual activity, and all forms of immoral behavior, including impure or unkind thoughts. Thus, false words or bad deeds or intentions are as destructive of a fast as is eating or drinking.

Here are a few facts about learning a foreign language you may not know:
It makes your brain stronger
Learning a language is like a gym session for your brain! The part of your brain that controls decision making, problem solving and planning is strengthened by language learning. Switching between two different languages builds up this important area.
It improves your health.
Evidence suggests that bilingualism boosts your memory and creative skills. Scientists also believe that speaking two or more languages can delay the onset of diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia by 4 to 5 years.
It changes your brain structure.
There’s a reason why your head hurts after a difficult grammar class! The way in which parts of your brain communicate with one another changes when you’re studying a foreign language. Your synapses and neurons get denser, and this leads to more activity in other parts of your brain.
There’s no limit!
Everyone’s heard of polyglots, but what about hyperglots? These extraordinary people can speak ten or more languages, and there are instances of people fluently speaking 30 or even 50 languages. Hyperglots maintain that you can learn as many languages as you like, providing you give time and practice to each.

Here is a photo of performers celebrating Carnival in Rio. Carnival celebrates the period leading up to Lent, ending on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and this year it lasts from February 9 - February 17th. The dates will vary from year to year.

Like Mardi Gras and other Carnivals from around the world, it’s a big celebration of the food and pleasures that one has to give up during Lent.

In Brazil, Carnival is a really big deal, and the festivities are planned for months in advance.

Because the celebrations happen during February and March, which is during Brazil’s summer, the ambiance is perfect for massive parties. There is even a common saying in Brazil that, “the year starts only after Carnival” referring to the number of people that take their holidays between New Year’s and Carnival.

If you were to visit Brazil right now you would see packed beaches and bars. And you would see stores that don’t open or only have reduced hours. The entire country seems to slow down, getting ready for the magic celebration to come.

It will be celebrated with food and the presenting of money to younger family members. Each culture from China, Bhutan, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, Tibet and Vietnam may observe some different traditions around the holiday festivities. The order of the Chinese Zodiac is followed and this year is the year of the dragon.

Today we are going to discuss another Arab speaking country, Algeria. Algeria is the largest (land wise) of the Arab speaking countries and is surrounded by Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Niger Libya and Tunisia. It is south of Spain, separated from Spain by the Mediterranean.
Algeria is one of the most popular tourist countries in North Africa, and is the second largest country in Africa. It is home to a diverse landscape and a population of more than 40 million people.
Other languages spoken in Algeria include Berber and French and the major religion is Islam. The Sahara desert makes up more than four-fifths of the country's area. The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world, excluding the Arctic and Antarctic. And despite the desert being a large part of the country, other parts of Algeria receive more rain than London and in recent years has even seen snowfall.
The country's capital city is Algiers, is known as "Alger la Blanche' (Algiers the White" because of its whitewashed buildings.

We are talking about Russian dialects today. I always think of it as one language but actually there are 3 dialects. However, compared to other languages, it is less different across the country than other European languages can be.
The Northern dialect is spoken primarily in the north and east, the southern is spoken in the southern part (of course) and the central part of Russia while the Central dialect is the language of Moscow and the basis of modern literary Russian. The northern and southern dialects are the most different with the central being a combination of both.

Seollal is the Korean Lunar New Year and is celebrated in South Korea. In 2024, Seollal will be celebrated from February 9th to February 11th. The exact date of Seollal varies every year, because it’s based on the Lunar Calendar. It coincides with the second new moon, after the winter solstice. Seollal includes the visit of adult children to their family homes, spending time with their own families, ushering in the new year with traditional customs, food, and games.

Dressed in traditional hanboks (clothing), younger family members offer saebae, or the new year’s bow, to the elders. They also present them with gifts, which often include money, fruits, hone, ginseng, a hanwoo set, or health products. In return, the elders give their blessing and often offer saebae-don or new year’s money to the younger family members.

Here is my daughter Grace!

The 12 Days of Giving lets us share 12 stories of impact that your giving has on Club kids all year long. One story each day will be shared from now until 12/31.

We're officially at the halfway point for 12 Days of Giving, so we thought we'd share a different kind of story today!

DAY 6: Like many Camp Rock campers, Grace began her Camp Rock journey at age 6. Grace always looked up to the staff members at Camp Rock as a kid; she says “Camp staff helped me to overcome obstacles big and small.” Because of her experience as a camper, Grace went on to become a Counselor In Training (CIT) in high school and then a staff member herself! She says “I chose to become a staff member because the staff I had as a camper made a huge difference in my life. They helped me grow, so now I get to make that same impact on kids’ lives in the same way they did for me.”

Now, Grace has been at Camp Rock for 16 whole summers! Her favorite part of Camp Rock is the community that camp creates--not just between staff and campers, but also including parents, families, alumni, and past staff members.

Without donors like you, Grace would not have been able to experience Camp Rock as a camper, or to go on to continue to want to give back to the Club as a staff member.

Thanks to donors like you, Monroe County kids like Grace have access to the Club and all it offers. Thank you for giving! bgcbloomington.org/donate
