On April 30, 1975, Vietnam changed forever.
Black April is an important date that will forever change Vietnamese history. It is known as the day the capital of South Vietnam, Saigon, was captured by North Vietnamese communists. Due to the Fall of Saigon, many Vietnamese citizens fled their homes to seek refuge elsewhere. For those Vietnamese people who chose to flee their homeland, their journey was a matter of life or death. They experienced a number of hardships including but not limited to overcrowded boats, lack of food and water, and pirate raids.
Today, 45 years later, we remember the lives of the Vietnamese refugees who did not survive the journey to safe passage as well as the lives of the U.S. soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of people.
