Are there risks and harms of the metaverse on youth in America? 🥽

New research by cyberbullying expert and our very own Criminology and Criminal Justice professor Sameer Hinduja as well as Cyberbullying Research Center reveals some eye-opening findings and recommendations like:

👧 Girls face significantly more sexual harassment, grooming and gender-based attacks on VR.

👁️‍🗨️ Hate speech, bullying, harassment, sexual harassment, grooming behaviors, and unwanted exposure to violent or sexual content were reported by a significant percentage of youth.

📋 Platforms should establish and enforce comprehensive community guidelines that explicitly address harassment and abuse.

🎮 Parents should take the time to familiarize themselves with available parental control features on VR devices and metaverse platforms to set boundaries, monitor activities, and restrict certain features as needed.

📺 Screen-sharing or mirroring a teen’s VR experience with parents also can be an effective deterrent to inappropriate behavior.

Our newest series will highlight both criminal justice and social work professors Florida Atlantic University. We’re kicking it off with Dr. Michael Robinson — our newest leadership hire as Director & Professor at the Sandler School of Social Work.

Dr. Robinson’s research is centered on African American males and their interactions with law enforcement. He is a prolific author, and has received several accolades for his outstanding work in the field of social work.
