As proud SIAM members, we love stepping outside the box to participate in activities that not only help raise funds for our society but also foster a sense of community! Our recent ticket scanning event was a fantastic way to contribute to important initiatives like SCUDEM, SIAM socials, and our upcoming outreach programs.
Not only did we support our chapter, but we also enjoyed a wonderful opportunity to bond and network outside our usual Tuesday meetings. A heartfelt thank you to all our SIAM members and officers who showed up and made this event a success!
We encourage all members to take advantage of such eventsโthey are a great way to help contribute to the SIAM BSU chapter while having fun! Plus, who doesnโt love free perks. After the ticket scanning, we got to watch a game for free., and our dinner was covered with delicious free food!
Letโs continue to build our SIAM community. Please keep an eye out for more events coming your way!

Exciting Insights at SIAM!
Have you noticed how diverse our discussions are in the field of applied mathematics? Recently, we had the pleasure of learning from Dr Michael Perlmutter, who delved into the world of regression. While you may be familiar with the term, Dr. Perlmutter took us deeper into its application within machine learning, covering essential topics like classification and logistic regression.
We know you want to hear more about these insightful talks, so remember to join us every Tuesday! Our sessions are designed to enrich your understanding and spark new ideas in applied mathematics.
A big thank you to Dr Michael Perlmutter for his engaging presentation!
Looking forward to seeing you all this Tuesday!

Recap: Distinguished Lecture by Dr Stephan Wild on Optimization and Learning
We were thrilled to host Dr. Stephan Wild for an insightful Distinguished Lecture on โOptimization and Learning with Zeroth-Order Stochastic Oraclesโ. This session dived into an especially challenging area of data-driven science and engineering: how to effectively work with noisy oracles that arenโt suited for differentiable programming.
Dr. Wild shared groundbreaking approaches for tackling problems where only noisy feedback is available and traditional gradient-based methods fall short. He discussed innovative strategies that:
1) Improve scalability in zeroth-order optimization, especially under noisy conditions.
2) Utilize randomized subspaces and adaptive estimates to refine results iteratively.
This was such an incredible opportunity to explore advanced optimization techniques in data science and engineering anyway do you want to hear more๐? Join us every Tuesday for more seminars and lecturesโdonโt miss a day!
Thank you to everyone who attended!

Title: Dark Matter Halo Density Calibration
Abstract:
In this synthesis, we reviewed the literature on halo density calibration. Several years of research have been conducted to understand dark matter, but it remains a mystery to Cosmologists. Despite many efforts, there still remain significant gaps in the literature. The ultimate goal is to reconcile dark matter theories (which include fitting functions and simulations) with observations. This will help us obtain an accurate and thorough understanding of the dark matter halo density profiles, which will in turn help us understand the formation of cosmic structure. New halo properties have been detected in simulations and observations but are still poorly understood. Analytic fitting functions such as NFW and Einasto profiles have also been shown to perform poorly under several conditions. We do not know yet if new physics can help us understand the mysterious dark matter but probing dark matter halos remains a good approach. We identified gaps in the literature and suggested solutions to some of them. Specifically, we demonstrated how machine learning can help us obtain more accurate predictions than analytic models and also estimate error bars on these predictions. Finally, we presented a computing artifact on uncertainty quantification.

Title: Structure preserving numerical methods for conservation laws
Time and Date: 11:00am - 12:00pm on Friday September 2, 2022
Place: Lewis 208 (Wan Conference Room)
Abstract:
Exact solutions to systems of conservation laws in multiple spatial dimensions often possess interesting additional properties which are a consequence of the equations and which can be formulated as PDEs. Examples are the evolution equations of vorticity or angular momentum, involutional constraints, stationary states or singular limits. Usually, the same numerical diffusion which renders a Finite Volume method stable, prevents it from preserving any of those additional properties. I will show strategies how to modify the numerical diffusion in order to obtain vorticity preserving and low Mach number compliant methods. This enables the numerical methods to capture essential properties of the equations without excessive grid refinement.
