Colorblind.
This is Kevin. I killed his brother two years ago. Now we are friends.
He’s black. I’m white.
Kevin was there when his brother Joey randomly decided to pull a gun on my girlfriend in a parking lot where we had just finished eating. In response I drew my firearm to save her life which resulted in an exchanged of gunfire.
Tori was shot at twice and I was shot at six times before a wound I delivered resulted in Joey’s instantaneous departure.
I only knew Kevin’s brother for the last 4.7 seconds of his life. Joey was 43. Who am I to judge the last 4.7 seconds of his life? What about the previous 43 years?
After I was exonerated, I learned as much as I could about Joey for the next six months. I wanted to know why.

I learned he had a very rough few months, and that day he had been significantly compromised by more than 6 substances that would have had a compounding effect on anyones anger, judgment and decision making ability.
That’s all I know. And despite his actions towards me, I held no judgment, until I found out, that he was black.
That being said, in light of recent events in Boston, how stupid does that sound?

I hold no judgment on the man that tried to murder me. How? Because everyone has their own demons to deal with and complex challenges in life that are hard to understand. People loved him for a reason. I can’t imagine they loved him simply because he was black.
The last few seconds of Joey’s life, shouldn’t define him. He was a good Father, he had love for a woman that loved him back, and he had love for his family. And I’m sure he will be dearly missed.
Kevin and I are friends. We check in and talk often. Kevin even calls me brother. And I do the same. Which considering the circumstances, on Kevin’s part, that is amazing.
I can only hope…
that for as long as we are friends…
Kevin never finds out…
that I’m white.
If Kevin and I can see each other as brothers despite our circumstances, which far outweigh something as stupid as skin color, I hope others can too.
I’m sharing for all the families impacted by the recent attacks in Buffalo NY. We are all family. Let’s treat each other as such.
