INTRODUCING… “Clepsydra” (2024) by Bobby Zokaites!
Inspired by the waterwheel at C.W. Moore Park located in downtown Boise, Tempe-based sculptor Bobby Zokaites draws on the history of water as a tool for society-building to spark viewer curiosity and encourage engagement.
Zokaites’ sculpture features a central wheel and repetition of form referencing the sheer number of waterwheels originally used to irrigate Boise and Grove Street. Water and wheels were also used throughout history and across the world to measure time.
Consisting primarily of steel, this sculpture is modeled after ancient water clocks known as “clepsydras.” These six unique water-carrying vessels represent the evolution and beauty of human ingenuity as well as the immigrant populations who developed this neighborhood including (left-right): Russian, German, Japanese, Chinese, Basque, and Swedish.
Our sincere thanks to members of the design team, Capital City Development Corporation, and Guho Corp for their involvement and support.
The Old Boise Blocks Waterwheel Barrier Art project is one of three public artworks that are part of Capital City Development Corporation’s Rebuild Old Boise Blocks on Grove Street project. These community-driven infrastructure and placemaking improvements support economic vitality and a stronger, more connected neighborhood. Learn more at www.ccdcboise.com

We’re turning the spotlight inward, inviting you to go behind the scenes to meet the staff at Boise Arts & History. As Boise’s local cultural agency dedicated to fostering a sense of belonging through accessible and place-based arts and history, we hope you’ll follow along and SAY HELLO as we introduce the amazing professionals on our team at the City of Boise.
Everyone, SAY HELLO to Savannah Shaon, Airport Public Art Project Coordinator!
Savannah (she/her) liaises between the departments of Arts & History and Boise Airport to support the implementation of the airport’s Arts Master Plan. Working across departments and alongside the artist community, she will expand and strengthen the airport’s art collection through new opportunities, projects, and programming.
After earning a Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Justice Systems from Truman State University, Savannah made a career change and moved to Rome, Italy to earn a Master of Arts in Art History from John Cabot University. While there, she studied ancient and contemporary Italian art and explored the region through museums, cultural heritage sites, and cafes (sipping espresso!). Upon graduating, she joined the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts in Alabama as a curator, playing a key role in developing, producing, managing, and implementing temporary and permanent public artworks, exhibitions, and artist-driven initiatives.
As opportunities for new works of public art arise from growth and construction at the Boise Airport, she is excited to bring her background in contemporary art and experience producing and shepherding projects within visual arts in the public realm.
Warm and approachable, Savannah revels in the joy of simple pleasures, from lounging in the sun, and reading classics by Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters, to long chats with friends, and meeting new people. She also enjoys a good challenge, from hiking and running in the Boise Foothills, to brain games like Sudoku, or experimenting in the kitchen.

INTRODUCING... Reclaimed Majesty (2024), Boise’s inaugural Art Port, by Serena Allen-Szatkowski!
Responding to the City of Boise's Climate Action Curb It initiative, Reduce/Reuse, and located on Grove Street between 13th & 14th streets, this temporary, two-year public artwork is made of repurposed steel scraps and a touch of spray paint. Of this work, Boise artist Serena Allen-Szatkowski, currently enrolled and working towards a bachelor’s of Fine Arts at Boise State University, says:
“The coyote is a prominent species of the Boise Foothills and her cub will inhabit this territory long after she is gone. Being a steward of nature means taking responsibility for the environment shared by all and recognizing that our actions today will impact future generations. The coyote and her cub also gaze towards the direction of the Mountain Cove and Cottontail Loop trail as an invitation to explore Boise’s wilderness.”
The first of two, Boise’s inaugural Art Port consists of plinths with universal mounting plates allowing for a temporary and continual rotation of sculptures for public display.
Made possible through a partnership between the city’s Arts & History and Public Works departments, along with Capital City Development Corporation (CCDC), this program is part of CCDC’s Rebuild Linen Blocks on Grove Street project. These community-driven infrastructure and placemaking improvements support economic vitality and a stronger, more connected neighborhood.
Our sincere thanks to Boise State's Associate Professor of Sculpture Lily Lee and Guho Corp for their assistance and support.

William A. White III, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at UC Berkeley, returned to Boise, his hometown, to lead a volunteer powered archaeological dig in the River Street Neighborhood in 2015. The findings are the center of his newly published book: 'Segregation Made Them Neighbors; An Archaeology of Radicalization in Boise, Idaho'.
We met with Bill to dig (see what we did there?) into the surprising thing that archaeologists get wrong, hidden truths found in historical laws for fashion, and his intriguing take on the afterlife. What we really love: the frank discussion on the creation of whiteness. What is it? Addressed through artifacts, you don’t have to dig deep to discover that archaeology isn’t “the nice, neat, tidy package” you expected. It’s an exposure to recent histories that can be uncomfortable, painful even. And it’s worth it. Awareness can lead to healing; “What you do with that awareness is up to you.”
