“It was really fun to hang out with him for a day… Being in an interview is a performance in itself, and he's aware of that. And he just kept going, you know, like just walking around London. He just had something to say about everything, just like a running commentary.”
This summer, Pitchfork Features Editor Ryan Dombal spent the day in London with ’s Matty Healy. This week, he joined Editor-in-Chief and Reviews Editor on our podcast to talk about what it was like hanging out with the frontman, the band’s latest album and what makes them charming, fun and more than a little absurd. In his autobiography, Raffi writes that he “was impressed with the novel approach described” in the magazine article he read about Ilana Cameron and the “child-directed” school her dad started for her. Raffi, among many other celebrities and academics, paid visits to both Wondertree and Virtual High to check out this unique learning experiment.

Raffi’s child-honoring book — “Child Honouring : How to Turn This World Around” — is filled with essays from a range of contributors (check out the glowing foreword from The Dalai Lamai!) all seeking to impart their insights into how we can restore our future by putting children first. It was co-edited by our guest in this week’s episode, Dr. Sharna Olfman.
Hear more about Dr. Olfman, Raffi, the creation of the book and the ins and outs of the child-honoring philosophy on this week’s episode of “Finding Raffi”!

One morning, Raffi says he woke up from a deep sleep with a vision. A vision that connected person, culture and planet. It would be called "Child Honoring.”
The child-honoring philosophy seemed to be a culmination of everything Raffi had been learning and singing about throughout his career, Raffi was determined to spread his vision as far and wide as possible. So he gathered the top thinkers in every field to help shape his ideas and put them on paper. One of these top thinkers was Dr. Sharna Olfman, a leading developmental psychologist and co-editor of Raffi's Child Honoring book.
Listen to our host Chris Garcia’s conversation with Dr. Olfman, as he tries to understand what this philosophy is all about and how he, as a new parent, can tap into it.

The 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro was a huge inspiration for Raffi. The 1980s were years of tremendous growth for Raffi and his career. It’s the decade he released his most famous song, “Baby Beluga.” He recorded his first concert video in 1984: “A Young Children’s Concert With Raffi.” Troubadour, his record company, is selling hundreds of thousands of albums. And yet, Raffi was thinking hard about his audience, and examining how he could continue his career but never at the expense of their innocence.
Check out a few pictures from that time in Raffi’s life:
