On July 23rd, Governor Healey announced changes to the Emergency Assistance (EA) family shelter system that will force children and their families out with no safe place to sleep at night.
Families who are deemed eligible for shelter will now be forced to choose: wait in an unsafe place for a shelter placement or stay for 5 nights in a state-run overflow site but then wait at least 6 months to access EA shelter.
EA shelter is the last resort for families with no safe place to sleep. This change is going to leave families and children with no other options. Five days is not enough time to find housing or alternative temporary options. This is another step towards dismantling the EA shelter system that has been in place for over 40 years. This policy will increase unsheltered homelessness throughout Massachusetts.

As we think about all the changes, the city is moving through transit, housing, access to small businesses, access to childcare in our schools… community needs continue to be top-of-the-line for many of our residents.
Staying involved and having a seat at the table as changes are being proposed is a major part of our focus. We invite you to join in on a conversation around the redevelopment of Columbia Road and what the future holds for Transportation in our neighborhoods. We are talking about the mamas, aunties, uncles and others in our family or our personal networks…who step in to provide childcare when needed. Licensed and unlicensed exempt care givers DESERVE to be paid for their hard work, love and time.
At $9 to $23 a day… we say this is a slave wage and this issue MUST be addressed!
1) Raise voucher reimbursement rates to at least minimum wage 2) Make the voucher more flexible for parents 3) Give FFN providers and parents a voice
