The Unitarian Universalist Association’s Holdeen India Program is extremely saddened to learn of Ela Bhatt's passing yesterday. Affectionately called Elaben by all, she was a beloved mentor and inspiration to us during our more than four decades of partnership. Elaben was the founder in 1972 of the Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA), a trade union in the state of Gujarat that has since become a global movement for women's rights. Rooted in the values of Mahatma Gandhi and women's empowerment, SEWA has brought together millions of women laboring in the informal economy to secure just and sustainable livelihoods. Elaben’s commitment to amplifying the voices of impoverished women workers will continue to guide us in everything we do. We hold her family and the entire SEWA community in our prayers amid this tremendous loss.

General Assembly holds emergency special session on Ukraine 03/01/2022

Last Friday when Russia exercised its veto to block a Security Council resolution, the world saw how action can be inhibited by the whims of any of the Council's five permanent members (China, France, Russia, UK, and U.S.). That resolution would have demanded that Moscow immediately stop its attack on Ukraine and withdraw all troops. To address the urgency of the moment despite the Security Council's inaction, the UN has convened a rare emergency session of the General Assembly, where all 193 Member States have the opportunity to discuss and vote on a resolution, with no chance for veto from a superpower. A vote on a draft resolution on Ukraine is tentatively expected on Wednesday.

General Assembly holds emergency special session on Ukraine As fighting escalates in Ukraine, UN Member States met on Monday for a rare emergency special session of the General Assembly to discuss the crisis.
