Comienzos was founded in 1986 and means "beginnings." For more than two decades Comienzos has been helping thousands of people to start again in the recovery of a healthy, free, and dignified life. Our classes include:
•Learning and Practice in Nonviolent Communication, as developed by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg;
•Meditative practices, including seated meditation, T’ai Chi Chih, and yoga; and,
•12 Step Recovery
We are excited to introduce our 4-week series, Pathways to Peace: Essential Communication Skills for Christian Leaders. This is a new Heart-to-Heart offering that will integrate Christian Spiritual Formation with Nonviolent Communication and is led by Rev. Dr. Julene Tegerstrand. As we approach a pivotal time in our communities with election results and family gatherings, this series offers an excellent opportunity to strengthen your communication abilities. Dr. Peter A. Levine taught Steve Tumolo our beloved NVC instructor.

Dr. Levine instilled a wealth of knowledge. In Steve amongst others that have familiarized themselves with his work.

If you are not familiar, he is the developer of "Somatic Experiencing", a naturalistic and neurobiological approach to healing trauma.

Our Story
For nearly a decade, Heart to Heart has been committed to helping incarcerated people find pathways to healing. Central to its teaching in jails and prisons is Mindfulness, Empathy, Decision-making, and Conflict Transformation (MEDC) training, delivered by skilled practitioners and inspired by Marshall Rosenberg’s philosophy of Nonviolent Communication.
These core skills have been essential in challenging the destructive thoughts, behaviors, and habits of hundreds of its learners. An inmate and Heart to Heart student at Bayside State Prison said that “Heart to Heart has helped me understand myself and my actions of the past and present...I am a changed man and will be coming before my parole board soon; I hope they will be able to see I have changed.”
In addition to teaching in jails and prisons, Heart to Heart leads community classes and workshops. One group, held every Tuesday at Heart to Heart’s offices in Merchantville, is designed to help returning citizens and community members alike practice MEDC skills and nonviolent communication.
“Being part of Heart to Heart is making me more accepting of my own needs and of sometimes difficult interactions with others,” said Anne, a regular of the practice group. Another attendee, Lauren, says she started coming for the opposite reason. “I often have my needs at the forefront of the conversation...I need the skills to listen to others, as well as myself.”
