Ecclesia Ministries - common cathedral

Common cathedral is an outdoor church and street ministry with chronically homeless Bostonians at its center. Outdoor worship is the heart of common cathedral.

This is our church -- and it takes place outdoors on the Boston Common at 1:00 pm every Sunday, rain or shine, sleet or snow. Roughly 80 people gather for worship each week at the Brewer Fountain. While most of our congregation is homeless, many who call our church home are also professors, business people, clergy, students, care-givers and professionals. Most weeks, members of suburban parishes f

It was a cold afternoon on the common for lunch and worship, but for those who gathered we were able to receive the abundant hospitality of the Church of the Advent from Medfield, with bags of sandwiches and snacks, warm hats and gloves too. We were also inspired by many prayers offered and the joy of hearing Richard preach!

As the first Common Art of the month we celebrated this month’s birthdays with cupcakes! 🎉 We had a mosaic workshop as we do every first and third Wednesday of the month. This week the focus was mosaic holiday ornaments. We also continued working with dried flower arrangements. Finally we said goodbye to our two Fall semester interns Charlotte and Sam. Reverend Tamar wore her blinged collar today😸

This weekly art program offers space, art materials, and supportive relationships to encourage individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty to learn, engage, and connect in community. common art promotes access to the arts by providing opportunities and resources that facilitate creative expression.

CityReach is an overnight urban outreach program begun in March 1996 for youth (with accompanying adults), young adults, and college students from churches of any denomination. The program gives these young people the opportunity to learn first hand about homelessness from people who have experienced it. During the 20 hour session, participants join CityReach staff in street ministry and offer hospitality, food and clothing. This is followed by times of sharing and reflection.

The program starts on Friday evening and ends on the following Saturday afternoon. Participants arrive at 7 p.m. Friday night, and are addressed by staff who are experiencing, or have experienced, homelessness. They walk through the city guided by members of common cathedral and end the evening with a simple worship service. Participants sleep at a local church. On Saturday morning participants offer clothing that they have collected and a simple meal to unhoused guests who come to "shop" for clothing from among the donated items. Participants form teams for street outreach, taking sandwiches and clothes to people at South Station, Copley Square, Boston's waterfront and other sites. All then eat lunch and reflect together about their experiences in light of the Gospel, write a prayer, and talk about next steps for them personally and/or as a group. Housed participants prepare to present their experiences to their home congregations.

Help us dismantle the stigmas surrounding homelessness!
A gift to the Winter Walk goes directly toward expanding our reach and sharing more stories as we all have so much to learn from those who are experiencing homelessness themselves.
A gift could go toward a stipend for a community member to speak with youth, community groups, or companies as the work they are doing should always be fairly compensated.

What eventful and bittersweet Common Art. This past Wednesday we celebrated our beloved community member Sierra. She will be leaving our community but is continuing to serve the unhoused community. We had cupcakes and invited community members to share affirmations about Sierra as we bid her farewell. We also had a water color and black out poetry workshop. You will be missed Sierra!
