The Seattle Aquarium announced its new $160 million Ocean Pavilion will open the end of August, just northeast of the aquarium's existing building on Alaskan Way.

The 50,000-square-foot aquarium expansion project, built by Turner Construction, features a multistory, 360,000-gallon coral reef ecosystem including about 3,500 sustainably sourced tropical fish, invertebrates, sharks, rays, bowmouth guitarfish, schooling fish, seahorses, mangroves, and nearly 30 species of coral.

We’re proud of the work our Local 302 members did on this project including:
-Members working for Titan rerouted the storm and sewer, along with general site improvement throughout the process of the project.
-Brundage Bone pumped concrete for the project.
-Barnhart hands performed hoisting prior to and after the tower crane was erected and dismantled.
-Turner hands ran the tower crane, forklift, manlift, elevator, and survey for the entirety of the project.
-Omega Morgan Rigging & Machinery hands installed multiple tanks once the building envelope was completed.
-Apex Tower Crane hands erected and dismantled the tower crane and exterior hoist.

Congratulations to long time Local 302 member Vickie Brown for making the front cover of the Alaska Economic Trends magazine published by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

Women make up just 14 percent of Alaska's construction workers, and as demand for construction labor rises, hiring more women could help broaden the worker pool. What might make the difference?

More than 50 years ago on April 28, Workers Memorial Day, the Occupational Safety and Health Act went into effect, promising every worker the right to a safe job — a fundamental right. The law was won because of the tireless efforts of the labor movement, which organized for safer working conditions and demanded action from the government to protect working people.

Since then, unions and our allies have fought hard to make that promise a reality — winning protections under the law that have made jobs safer and saved lives.

But that critical work is far from done. Each year, thousands of workers are killed and millions more suffer injury and illness because of dangerous working conditions. So, every year on Workers Memorial Day, working people remember those who were hurt or killed on the job and renew our struggle for safe workplaces. Let’s never forget and continue to organize for safe workplaces and to save lives.

The Port of Seattle’s Terminal-5 is now ready for the world's largest container ships, in part due to Local 302 operator work. Nordholm Companies removed the old container cranes and barged them to Tacoma. With Orion Marine as the signatory contractor, our members worked to expand the pier including a lot of dredging and driving pile.

The modernization Terminal 5 included two reconfigured berths with six Super Post Panamax cranes to improve operational efficiency. The berths were dredged to a depth of minus 57 feet, from an old range of minus 45 to minus 50 feet.

It’s National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week. Local 302 participates in this national awareness week along with construction and transportation organizations across the country to spotlight the need for everyone to do their part in keeping road construction crews and the traveling public safe.

Get off your phones while driving. Don't drink and drive. And, slow down and pay attention in work zones. Have patience and realize road crews are just doing their job to improve your transportation experience.
