Springtime in Littleton, CO means the colorful display of flowering crabapple trees, signaling the end of winter and the start of gardening season. But did you know, these trees aren't just a happy accident? Over 40 years ago, a City beautification program led to the planting of many of the mature trees we enjoy today. In 1969, Mayor Vaughn Gardinier kickstarted the program, inspiring both the City Council and homeowners to plant thousands of crabapple trees along streets and in yards. Today, more than 7,000 of these trees adorn the community, earning Littleton the title of Flowering Crabapple Capital of Colorado in 2014. Now is the perfect time to take a drive along the crabapple route and witness these beautiful trees in full bloom!
