Through an internship with Ferguson Pyatt Architects, a Boulder-based architectural firm, Masani Salazar, a fourth-year architecture student, took a vital role in the firm’s long-term community development project with Taos Pueblo.

“Masani joined when the project had already been underway for a couple of years,” Pyatt explained. “But for us, it was really important to include Masani in all aspects of the project. This is her community. Her family is there. She is emotionally and intimately knowledgeable of the culture.”

With its bright yellow walls and large black lettering, the Community Engagement, Design and Research Center (CEDaR) in the Environmental Design building is hard to miss.

But with a single door and no indoor windows to reveal the room’s inner workings, the mystery surrounding what goes on behind those walls is palpable.

“The space is a little bit closed right now,” Shawhin Roudbari, ENVD assistant professor and CEDaR’s co-director said. “Even if the yellow is very calling and is screaming ‘yes CEDaR is here!’ it still doesn’t open the doors.”

One way to open the doors might be to redesign them.

First project of my junior year!! POSE is a yoga studio designed using abstractions of forms found in traditional yoga postures. The assorted timber becomes a delicate, sculptural form while also being more affordable and sustainably sourced.

As part of an independent study this summer, students converted a central conference room into a materials library.

The space will function less as a typical reference library and more as an experiential space. “It’s supposed to be exploratory,” Andrew Song, senior in product design commented. “It’s something we’ve been missing in this program. We don't often have access to physical examples of things we could use to build with.”

Carson was tasked with completely revitalizing a disused parking lot in Downtown Boulder known as The Spruce Street Annex

He came up with a design that would best fit the urban context, and even constructed a hand-made replica of the space to show how it would function!
