Unfortunately it’s a little late in the season but a necessary post. We’re seeing multiple rounds of snow forecasted this weekend.
Most trails and gates cross private property so with this exciting news please do not open or go around any gates. If we have any issues our clubs will hear about it and will only jeopardize our relationship with property owners. Please use caution ⚠️

News release: Grant-in-aid snowmobile trails close March 31

March 28, 2023

The statutory end of the snowmobile riding season on grant-in-aid trails is midnight, March 31, when permits with private landowners expire. Snowmobile trails will remain open on public land while weather and snow conditions permit. Riders should be aware that trail grooming operations will cease when conditions are too warm to effectively groom.

“We have had great snowmobiling this year. We are so appreciative of the many snowmobile club volunteers who made it possible by grooming Minnesota’s extensive system of grant-in-aid trails,” said Ann Pierce, director of the DNR’s Parks and Trails Division. “They worked long and hard this winter to keep trails in good riding condition for so many Minnesotans.”

Late season snowmobilers should keep safety in mind and be aware of changing conditions. As snow recedes, rocks and other obstructions can become a hazard to trail users.

“As the temperatures rise, riding conditions will deteriorate,” said Wade Miller, DNR trail and snowmobile program consultant. “We advise checking trail conditions before leaving home.”

The statewide snow depth map and state trail conditions are updated by 2 p.m. every Thursday on the DNR website.

Even if snow conditions are good, the DNR reminds snowmobilers not to ride on grant-in-aid trails that cross private land after March 31. Starting on April 1, riding these trails without the landowner’s permission is trespassing.

For more information, visit the DNR’s snowmobiling page or contact the DNR Information Center by emailing [email protected] opens in a new browser tab or by calling 888-646-6367 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Trail update 3/22/23:
Tonight we should have the city trail system smoothed out. Steve and Chuck will team up and do the Pine Center route and I suspect we may hit Harding by Saturday morning. Pls be careful as some approaches got pushed up from city plows and may account for a few rough transitions. This maybe our last time we groom for the season so get out and enjoy it. 😃❄️

Trail update 3/17/23: groomer shack to 371 bridge/Mississippi river trail maintenance. Safely reduced the snow on the bridge and marked trail ”icy use caution”. Trail over bridge turned out beautifully. Then swung rig SW bound through Crow Wing State Park and groomed short stint of the spur trail behind the Safari North.
Swapped out with volunteer Nathan from the club and headed south to Harding. trails are laying out perfectly. I suggest you ride while you can ENJOY!
-volunteer Trent. 😃

As of this evening our whole system has been groomed since this weekend. Trails are in great condition but the warmer temps ahead could cause for condictions to change rapidly. Enjoy them while you can!

Feb 25th grooming update. Crow Wing state trail, Harding and back to Brainerd will be complete by 11:45pm tonight. Sounds like a crew will touch up the Ironton route and Bruce will make a pass through the Brainerd City trail system before the weekend is over. Pending next weeks weather we hope to continue to maintain what we have for snow. For now get out their and ride while we can.

As many know, we recently lost one of our own. Many will remember longtime Snodeo, Gene Carlson. If you’ve attended our grass drags as a racer, Gene was the guy holding the big stick who took your entry money and directed you to racer parking. If you’ve ever been involved in an event where the Snodeos have presented a donation, you probably saw Gene helping hold up the giant check. When work had to be done, he was always the first one to show up and always stayed until the job was finished. He never let the lawn at the shack look any less than perfect. If you’ve played BINGO, you’ve probably bought a card or two from the big guy. Always quick with a wise crack, and some words of wisdom, Gene was just and all-around good guy and a great friend to many. We were blessed to have ol’ Gene-O as our friend and the club will never be quite the same without him. His legacy lives on through his 17 year-old son Owen who is also an active club member and has tagged along with his dad at club activities since he was a little kid. Owen, much like his dad is always quick to offer a helping hand when we need one. On Saturday the 25th we will be having a remembrance gathering for Gene at the groomer shack from 1-4. We will leave from the shack on a short ride with a heavy emphasis on vintage sleds between 9 and 10.

There’s nothing better than a quick 70 mile ride through Brainerd Snodeos trail system before breakfast. Even with warm temps and marginal snow, it was a beautiful morning to ride. The trails were so smooth that this rider didn’t even need all 4.5” of true long travel suspension.

01/28/2023

Even with the wind blown snow we’ve had the past few days, the eastern portion of our trail system is smooth. Be careful and watch out for frozen drifts when crossing open spaces. The snow piles up quickly in farm country. Get out and enjoy the sunshine today and ride the magic carpet that is the Brainerd Snodeos trail system!

This has been a topic of conversation...

It is time for the 12 Clubs of the CWCSTA to start looking into the cost of trail cameras to turn in the trespass violators. We cannot afford to lose anymore trails for the 98% of us that ride right.

01/06/2023

Trail update:
-Pine center and Harding groomed yesterday
-Riverton groomed after the snowfall
-City trail groomed just prior to snowfall and in good shape
-Airport spur groomed just prior to snowfall and in decent shape
-State park groomed just after snowfall
We will be evaluating and sending out groomers this weekend, most likely in the evenings.
Please ride on the right and keep a lookout for the big orange tuckers as we smooth out the trails this weekend!
Thank you, have a wonderful and safe weekend!

After another 30 man hours the Airport Spur is OPEN, and we plan to groom it tomorrow!
Harding was also groomed today and state park yesterday.
Have a happy New Year!

Sunday, January 1, 12-2pm: At the Brainerd Snodeos Groomer Shack, there will be refreshments and hot dogs for any weary snowmobiler who stops by. Come and check it out and enjoy a snack on us! There will be a QR link posted for our membership form as well.

With a hard stop at 2pm, after cleanup, for any riders who can live without the Vikings game, we will do a club ride to a location of our choosing. Non-club members are also welcome to ride along.

Check out the map in the picture for location. If you can navigate to the Crow Wing County Fairgrounds, you will find the shack easily.

12/28/2022

The Snodeos are ready to train the new generation snowmobiler. The good old reliable snowmobile safety sled is serviced and ready for this weekend’s training class.

12/27/2022

If anyone wants to ride Wednesday the 28th, let’s plan on leaving the shack between 4 and 5 and heading to Harding for a burger. We need to burn some fuel through the club sled before safety training this weekend so this is a good opportunity for a club ride.

12/24/2022

UPDATE:
After 24 man hours today, we got the North trail opened. The Airport spur should be next, but we do not have an expected finish date.

John went down to Harding and back with the groomer today, Chuck groomed the state park yesterday, and the City trail should be groomed shortly.

Thank you all for your patients as we work many hours clearing trails.

Merry Christmas to all from the Brainerd Snodeos

Ride along with the frontline workhorse for our club. The ARGO-8 wheeled, tracked amphibious vehicle is one of the most utilized tool in our shed. This is the leading swamp to Pine Center. The swamps have about 3-4ft of snow in the cattails. Be careful if you venture south of Brainerd as we haven’t groomed this system just yet. Trent Baumann
