Truth
It's me!
As I was Running laps in the pool at the YMCA, which is my favorite exercise these days, it occurred to me that what we label as mistakes from the past are really nothing more than decisions we made in good faith that didn’t work out. So cut yourself a break.
I am all for responsible gun ownership. I also believe it needs to require training and a license and insurance, like owning a car.
I went to high school in a small town in North Dakota - 285 people. I lived next door to my high school, and had the family's 30.06, a 12 gauge, a 410, and a .22 in my bedroom closet - for hunting, and for shooting mailboxes (I know, but that's a whole 'nother story). Some of my friends had gun racks in their trucks. It was part of small-town life.
I was bullied at school, brutally my first year as the new kid. But it NEVER occurred to me to walk the 20 yards to my house to get a gun and shoot up the high school. Nor did it occur to anyone else at BHS who had a less than stellar school experience. Most of the town never even locked our doors until a murder over Sunday School rocked the town.
I was a therapist in schools in Jax and worked with too many kids who were traumatized by live shooter drills - and in one instance, traumatized by a bank robber who walked down the street in front of my middle school fully armed and we went into legit lockdown. Talk to a 7th grader who was tasked with pushing furniture in front of the door to keep a shooter out and learn what a gut-check that is for any adult. Talk to a high school kid who lost family in the Charleston church shooting and realize you just can't help them make sense of it.
There is a sickness in this country that has made shooting and killing children - or anyone you believe is aggrieving you - less than the unacceptable horror it should be. Too many give tacit approval by their silence. No one needs an assault rifle for personal use - and most of the responsible gun owners I know agree. We need to find better ways to identify danger signs among individuals. Some families need to get their heads out of their asses and keep an eye on what their children and relatives are doing.
Too many parents are waking up this morning with empty bedrooms where their kids slept just a day before - as has happened too often during the last 20 years.
This is a public health emergency, people. We can be part of the problem or part of the solution. But the first step is responsible and rational gun control.
And deciding this is just. not. acceptable.
