Posted • This is important information from our friends at Tampa Veterinary Hospital. Due to high levels of bacteria found, a no-swim advisory has been issued for Davis Island Dog Beach and Apollo Beach Nature Preserve/Bahia Beach. Moderate bacteria levels were also found at Picnic Island. These locations are all in Hillsborough County. In Pinellas County, it is reported that Honeymoon Island has moderate levels of bacteria. Avoid these beaches until conditions have improved. As of the last report, Fort DeSoto Dog Beach is the only beach reporting good water quality.

Water samples are taken by the Florida Department of Public Health from dozens of beaches around the state to test for f***l coliform and enterococcus bacteria. These samples are taken weekly in Hillsborough County, and bi-weekly in Pinellas County. It takes a day before test results are back. The quality of the water is affected by numerous factors, including heavy rains which can flush contaminants from the land into our waterways into the gulf. As a reminder, these results have nothing to do with red tide.
