Battle rope always looks pretty bad@$$, but do you know what makes it such an effective exercise?
Tons of athletes, bodybuilders, and those looking to build cardio use the battle ropes in many of their workouts. The great thing about them is they’re low impact (however can be high effort), meaning they won’t place a lot of strain on your muscles or get them all too close to hypertrophy. This also means it’s great for those with injuries since you’re not bearing any weight. You control the pace and the difficulty of this exercise.
In addition to that, the battle ropes really are a full body workout. Your core is always working to keep yourself centered, legs stabilizing, upper body pulling/pushing, etc. This makes warming up super quick by increasing blood flow all over the body.
Here are some beginning variation exercises I have my clients and I do to either 1.) Get loose/Dynamic warmup 2.) work a specific motion with low impact OR 3.) get cardio training in. Try these out to bolster your workouts!
Side swings (forearm target)
Claw grip together+alternating (hand/grip strength)
Close grip curls (bicep)
Explosive squat slams (hips/legs)
Regular grip alternating/together (whole body/cardio)
Let’s talk heart health, and more specifically resting heart rate. It tells you much more about yourself than you think!!
Resting heart rate is generally your heart rate at it’s lowest point and is best measured right before bedtime or when asleep (if possible). This ensures your body is operating at it’s least busy point to see what your heart rate needs to be to perform basic bodily functions only. You can base your target exercise zones based on your goals from this number, but that’s for another post.
As you can see my RHR jumped significantly on Monday, any guesses why? My body needed to recover more at it’s most restful state! This can be caused by overworking the previous day, alcohol consumption, being sick, or lack of rest the previous day. This case specifically is a result of alcohol consumption, which causes a jump in RHR due to your body needing to work to remove the toxin (alcohol) from it system when at rest. Therefore, your body is working harder and needs more blood flow. As a result I wasn’t as recovered and explains why many people feel run down the next day. It’s the same way with being sick, our body is working harder to fight the sickness (virus, bacteria, etc.) at rest.
Generally speaking, the lower your RHR is, the better cardiovascular condition you are in. Since your heart works more efficiently with less pumps per minute as rest, it also does it when working. Less pumps, means less energy used, means energy last longer! This explains why you see marathon runners and most cardio based athletes with super low resting heart rates. The opposite can be said if it’s too high, you’d be in worse cardiovascular shape overall. Now there are some exceptions that have to due with pump volume AKA how much blood your body pumps out with each beat, but most of the time@it doesn’t vary significantly enough to cause too much of a difference. That also accounts for the ranges in the chart on the second slide.
Consistent cardio work, restful nights, and good lifestyle habits all come together to make your heart better and overall yourself better!
