Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis
We represent a wide range of thinking, from We train graduate clinicians in all the mental health fields as well as to academic scholars.
The Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis (MIP) is a comparative psychoanalytic training institute in which multiple psychoanalytic perspectives are brought together and taught in open, continuing dialogue. The Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis (MIP) was founded in 1987 to provide high quality training through a comparative approach to psychoanalysis. MIP recognizes psychoanalysis as

Join us in-person on Saturday, September. 28 for Re-Imagining Comparative Psychoanalysis: The Music of Theory. In psychoanalysis, we are lost without our theory, and yet theory can never find us if we cannot feel the music of it. This program will explore the music of theory: The music behind theory, that makes it possible for us to theorize; the music within theory that makes it beautiful and resonant among members of our psychoanalytic communities; and the music that emerges from theory, the song of ourselves that theory enables us to sing. Drawing upon elements of music and psychoanalytic theory, playing samples of music, and presenting new theoretical developments, Adam Blum will audition rhythms and harmonies of psychoanalytic philosophy through which we can more fully hear the music of our theories and feel the music of our lives.

In this program on September 14, we will learn about the major psychedelic agents being used and researched for use with mental health issues. We will explore the powerful links between psychedelics and psychoanalysis, including opening and working with the unconscious, non-ordinary states, and transference and countertransference. We will also discuss what analysts need to know about talking with patients interested in psychedelics, so participants can leave feeling well-informed and able to navigate this cutting-edge terrain.

MIP Member Tamar Vishlitzky died suddenly on Saturday afternoon, July 20. She was on a bike ride with a family member and was walking her bike across a street when she was struck and killed by a vehicle.
Tamar graduated from the MIP training program in 2021. Over the past two years, she taught the Clinical Seminar to first year candidates and served on both the Admissions and Training Committees. Tamar was a talented painter, who trained and worked as an artist before becoming a psychotherapist. She was the mother of two daughters, both currently in art school. Tamar was an extremely skilled and sensitive clinician and thinker. Her perspective and opinion on clinical matters – and, simply, on matters of living — were highly valued by her colleagues.
We invite MIP members to share their experiences of Tamar. I did not know her personally and still can barely take in this terrible news. I can only imagine how stricken close colleagues and friends must be.

Jade McGleughlin, LICSW is MIP’s 2024 Paul Graves Myerson Award Recipient. The Coordinating Committee proudly honors Jade McGleughlin, LICSW with this year’s Myerson Award. The Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis grants the Paul Graves Myerson Award to a member of the MIP community for outstanding contributions to the growth of our Institute or psychoanalysis in general. Dr. Myerson’s forthright and unstinting commitment to MIP in its founding days was consistent with the nature of his intellectual contributions to the field of psychoanalysis. His courage, vision, openness to ideas and plainspoken voice transcended limitations and constraints on the freedom of institutional and intellectual growth. In this spirit, MIP continues to honor noteworthy contributions to our community and our field with the Paul Graves Myerson Award. Jade will receive her award and acknowledgments at our Fall Party and Art Auction on October 5, 2024.
The following is an excerpt from a longer interview, please read the full article on our website through the link in our bio.
Tammy Feldman writes, “On an afternoon in early May, I had the pleasure of sitting down with David Doolittle to talk to him about his life and career. David has been a central figure in the MIP community since its founding—he was the very first person to enroll in MIP’s inaugural class in 1989. Over the intervening thirty-five years later, David’s influence on the MIP community has been far-reaching. As president, David has served on the training committee and helped found the fellowship program. He has taught over twenty-five courses, supervised over thirty analytic candidates, and received the Paul Meyerson award. When I learned that David would be leaving the Boston area in June to move closer to his grandchildren, I contacted him for this interview to document and honor his contribution to the MIP community.
David was a teacher, supervisor, and mentor of mine. Through my experience working with and learning from David, I have found him to possess a truly unique combination of passion, devotion, intellect, and humility.
These qualities are on full display in our recorded conversation. What follows are some highlights from this conversation. Topics that we discussed include the founding of MIP and its allure as an alternative to a traditional model of psychoanalytic training. David also spoke about his analysis and its transformative role in his life.”
The 2024 MIP graduation took place outdoors on June 1, a radiantly beautiful day. It was moving to watch the graduate Fellows and Candidates come forward to receive their certificates and to hear the speeches of graduating candidates and the faculty who honored them. Teaching and committee work at MIP are labors of love. The faculties of the Postgraduate and Stechler Fellowships and of the Four-Year Training Program were honored for the enormous work they put into MIP. Congratulations to all our graduating candidates and fellows. 2024 Four-Year Analytic Training Graduates: Dr. Kara W. Brown • Robert Dyer, LMHC • Shannon Mackey, LICSW • Mark Pooler, MSW, LICSW • Kelly R. Wilson, Ph.D. • Suhrida Yadavalli, LMHC

MIPO PROGRAM THIS SATURDAY: Retranscribing the Past - https://mailchi.mp/mipboston/mip-program-may
Presenting “Retranscribing the Past: Memory, subjectivity and trauma among Afghan asylum seekers in Greece” on Saturday, May 11. On the basis of ethnographic evidence obtained during fieldwork in Greece with Afghan asylum seekers, the presentation will elaborate on the concept of time in psychodynamic terms, as opposed to the phenomenological, chronologically-based experience of it. The claim is that temporality, in terms of psychic functioning, is based on non-linear, circular dynamics in which past and present experiences, affects, traumas are in a continuous unconscious dialogue and constantly inform each other, in a way that allows the past to be “retranscribed” in its deep meanings and intimate significance, and the present to acquire enhanced worth and connotations. The presentation will offer excerpts from the ethnographic/clinical material that sessions with two of my closest interlocutors in the field have provided, as well as my interpretations of them, against the backdrop of the social, political and cultural condition in which my interlocutors live. This will also lead into a broader critique of the system for controlling migratory flows that the Greek state implements. Sign up on our website.
MIP is accepting applications through May 1 for our Four Year Training Program in Psychoanalysis
and Advanced Candidate Training Program in Psychoanalysis. The Training Program in Psychoanalysis is a 4-year course of study in comparative psychoanalysis, both theory and practice. In an atmosphere of continuous, open dialogue with each other, our hope is that candidates will learn several psychoanalytic paradigms and develop an understanding of the philosophical and historical assumptions underlying each. Issues of race, culture, class, and gender have been integrated throughout our overall curriculum. This is part of our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion at MIP. Through the shared experience of presenting clinical work, applying analytic technique, and through personal analysis, candidates will deepen their knowledge and valuing of psychoanalysis as an adaptable means of treatment to differing clinical situations. Classes to meet in-person over 8 semesters on Fridays (11am-4:30pm) throughout the Greater Boston Area beginning in the Fall 2024. Learn more by visiting mipboston.org.
