The Common Application, accepted by over 1000 colleges, launched on August 1st. While the application is pretty straightforward, there are some things to look for as you register and complete it. ✅

Keep in mind that the most challenging parts of the application are the 250 to 650-word personal statement as well as the supplemental essays that some colleges require, so you need to dedicate a lot of time to writing and revising these responses. Don’t forget to proof them and have another person review your essays before you upload them to the application. 📝

Students spend lots of time and energy on their main Common Application essay and sometimes rush through their college-specific supplemental essays without much thought or care. ✍️

College admissions officers report that supplemental essays play an increasingly important role in the college application process. A supplemental essay is an extra essay beyond the personal statement or the primary application essay. 📝

Why is asking for help so hard? The expectations of college are much different from high school. Students are in class less often and are expected to study independently. There are no parents around reminding them to do their work or get a head start on the paper. 📝

Touring colleges is an important part of our role as educational consultants—and an enjoyable one as well. Joan Casey, president & founder, recently visited Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). 🏫

CMU stands out for its interdisciplinary approach, innovative research facilities, and strong sense of community. They also offer guaranteed housing for all students. With a wide range of academic programs and a vibrant campus life, CMU prepares students to make significant impacts in their fields and beyond. 📚

While engineering is the largest college within the university, CMU also has an artistic culture and is known for its stand-out architecture and theater programs. Their information systems programs intersect computer science, business and technology and offer five concentrations. The innovative BXA Intercollege Degree Programs combine arts and technology, allowing students to merge fields like psychology and music for careers such as music therapy. This program requires admission to the College of Fine Arts and an additional academic review. 🎶

In spring 2025, the ACT will launch an online National test which will be shorter than the current version -- 44 fewer questions and clocking in at approximately two hours. The science section will no longer be part of the core test, but will be an option for those interested. 🔬

This move is likely a response to the shorter Digital SAT which debuted in March 2024. There will still be a paper and pencil test offered and it is not yet clear if that version will be shorter. 📝

Moving from high school to college marks an exciting time in the life of a young adult. It is also a significant change that requires students to be more independent as they navigate a new environment with different policies and expectations than those of high school.

By working on skills in the spring and summer before students leave for college, they are more likely to know what to expect once they arrive on campus and be prepared for the rigors of college. Our support can continue through the first semester or first year of college.
