Being educated and knowledgeable is absolutely vital ; informed consent and informed refusal are both so important in a birth setting.
Informed consent is NOT telling you what is going to happen, it is INFORMING you on the benefits and risks of your choices and letting you make an informed decision.
There are topics that need to be discussed and researched before you give birth, that way you are aware of everything that is going on and educated on the choices that may be presented to you.
"Well how do I do that?"
🤎Hire a doula
🤎Take a birth education class
You have choices; you have options. “✨

Childbirth is natural, but it is not easy. Having supportive providers that create a safe space for the birthing mother is crucial for positive outcomes and healthy families. Unfortunately, black mothers may fear being overlooked or ignored due to the statistics, and we need to do our best to eliminate fear in childbirth.
Contact Shomilove’s Births to help you be heard during birth!!!

Are you ready for this conversation?
You would be surprised to learn that many women don't know this.
I'm not saying ignore your doctor or don't seek the help of medical professionals.
I am saying you are in control of your medical decisions. You are in control of your body. Not the doctor, not the hospital.
Definitely listen to their suggestions and advice, but seek the advice of many different professionals.
These are not pro bono doctors. They are paid a hefty check to provide you with the care you deserve. There are millions of them so do not settle.
Do you find yourself using language similar to this?
"They won't let me go past ___ weeks."
"They are making me have an induction."
"My doctor is allowing me to have a VBAC."
"She said I have to labor on my back."
"He said I can't ___ during labor."
Your doctor cannot make you do anything. If they are making you feel powerless, leave. You have the power to make all the decisions, including walking out.
On that note. No is a complete sentence. You do not have to explain your choice to validate your decision.
This time in your life that is suppose to be empowering and exciting has now become preparation to battle for their rights during birth.
IT HAS TO STOP.
There are HCPs who don't belittle their patients, who don't use fear to get their way, who educate, who support, and who empower their clients to research for themselves.

The Power of Breastmilk
A photo showing droplets of breast milk fending off armies of harmful bacteria in Petri dishes is going viral on Facebook.
The photo, posted by a biology student in England, features nine Petri dishes completely colonized with the bacteria M. Luteus, except in the center, where tiny puddles of breast milk have created what looks like “moats” of protection around themselves.
The student, Vicky Green, said she had similar results with Petri dishes full of e.Coli and the dreaded anti-biotic resistant “super bug” MRSA.
“The white spots in the middle are discs soaked in two samples of breastmilk,” Green wrote in the caption of her post. “See the clear bit around the discs ― that’s where the proteins in the milk have inhibited the bacteria!”
An article from YourPediatrician.com explains how this is possible:
“About 80 percent of the cells in breast milk are macrophages, cells that kill bacteria, fungi and viruses. Breast-fed babies are protected, in varying degrees, from a number of illnesses, including pneumonia, botulism, bronchitis, staphylococcal infections, influenza, ear infections, and German measles. Furthermore, mothers produce antibodies to whatever disease is present in their environment, making their milk custom-designed to fight the diseases their babies are exposed to as well.”
What’s even more impressive is that the samples of milk in the photos came from the mother of a 15-month-old and a 3-year-old, providing further evidence that breast milk continues to protect against illness long beyond infancy.
Breastfeeding Tips for the Holiday!
This is true! Stop letting these doctors induce you so they don’t have to be bothered during their holiday!
REMINDER👇🏼
Thanksgiving is not a valid reason for an induction!
Thanksgiving does not make an induction medically necessary.
Your HCP wanted to eat turkey with family does not make an induction medically necessary.
There are risks with induction. It isn't a simple as "picking a new due date".
Use the BRAIN method to ask questions and find out if your induction is medically necessary.
You have a choice in what happens in your birth🖤

🚫STOP FASTING!🚫
In many hospitals, patients are told not to eat or drink during labor. The medical term for this is “NPO,” which comes from the Latin nil per os, meaning nothing by mouth.
The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) announced that most healthy women can skip the fasting and, in fact, would benefit from eating a light meal during labor.
Did you know?? 🤔
Not eating can potentially increase your risk of needing a cesarean section?

Good News
As we enter Phase 3 and restrictions lessen within the community, Woman’s must remain diligent in protecting our patients and staff. We continue to reinforce mask usage and social distancing throughout our facilities, and are expanding our visitation policy for patients during delivery.
Every pregnant patient is allowed one support person during labor and one additional support person will be allowed to enter the room during delivery only. When the patient moves to her postpartum room she will only be allowed one support person. This change will go into effect beginning Tuesday, September 22 at 7:00 AM.
Boobin & Boozin! 😎 Thinking about mom-shaming the breast feeding mama that wants a drink? Know your facts first, then mind your business anyway 🙃
💥Less than 2% of the alcohol you consume goes into your breast milk. For you to have as much alcohol in your milk as cough syrup, you pretty much have to be dead 🍷
💥Alcohol leaves your breast milk at the same rate it leaves your blood. You do NOT need to pump & dump. It doesn’t eliminate alcohol from your breast milk! 🙅🏽♀️
💥If you can legally drive, you can feed! If you’re too impaired to drive, obviously don’t try to feed your baby. When you feel neurologically fine again, you can go back to breastfeeding 🚙
💥If you’re having a drink while feeding your baby, the milk that the baby is drinking has already been produced, therefore the alcohol has not reached your milk yet! Yes, you can drink while feeding 🥛
💥Some say beer (in moderation) can help milk production 🍻
💥Not your baby, not your business 🖕🏽
💥enjoy your drink, mama! Everyone will criticize everything you do anyway!

Edit: this post is not about addiction, smoking w**d, drinking excessively, taking shots, or anything else people are somehow making up in their minds. These are FACTS about how to safely drink a beer or maybe a glass of wine or a mixed drink. Don’t make up your assumptions other than what I specifically posted above☝🏽 Now carry on and keep sharing!
