Texas Seeks to End Catholic Ministry to Migrants:
For decades, Annunciation House in El Paso has followed Catholic social teaching by serving people in vulnerable situations—including migrants and asylum seekers. Yet the state of Texas is taking steps to criminalize their life-saving humanitarian work. These actions are an affront to the religious call to serve our neighbors as well as an attack on people seeking safety. El Paso’s Bishop along with faith and humanitarian groups are expressing solidarity and urging Texas to end this campaign of intimidation.
“Annunciation House is a model of service and a beacon of hope for people of faith who put their values into action. Together in one voice, we will continue to loudly proclaim that every person is created in the image of the Divine and deserves safety and respect.”

Yesterday, Feb.21, Judge John Sinatra Jr., presiding over the U.S. District Court in the Western District of New York, lifted all but one piece of a temporary restraining order (TRO) that had frozen the Farm Laborers Fair Labor Practices Act (FLFLPA).
Rural & Migrant Ministry spent more than 20 years seeking passage of this historic law that gives farmworkers the right to overtime after 40 hours, a day of rest and the right to bargain collectively. RMM is pleased with the Judge’s decision, which should enable efforts by farmworkers to improve their conditions, and their lives, to resume.
This TRO had effectively brought to a halt organizing and collective bargaining efforts among New York farmworkers. It arose from a federal lawsuit that agribusiness has brought against the New York State Attorney General and the Public Employee Relations Board (PERB), which holds legislative authority to oversee implementation of the 2019 law.
The one piece of the TRO that the Judge did not lift concerns the section of the law that said farmers cannot influence organizing campaigns, ruling this would curtail farmers’ freedom of speech. This is disconcerting, as there is a long history of employers unfairly influencing and even coercing workers during their efforts to unionize – especially when employers have power over their workers. Given that many farmworkers live on the farms where they work, and have no easy avenue to escape these pressures, this is a concerning decision.
Home The latest from RMM
Join the United Farm Workers, NY farm workers and their supporters to rally for farm workers' right to organize. The rally will occur before a preliminary hearing where the federal court will hear oral arguments on the grower lawsuit to strip farm workers of their union rights.
The rally will be held at 8:00 am on Wednesday February 21st, 2024 outside of the Robert H. Jackson Courthouse at 2 Niagara Square in Buffalo, NY.
Meet by the flag post at the corner of Niagara Square & Delaware Ave. Bring your banners, flags or signs in support of farm worker rights. Among the dozens of attendees will be UFW Secretary Treasurer Armando Elenes, farm workers, supporters and more.
At 9:30 am there will be a preliminary hearing regarding the growers' lawsuit filed against NY Governor Hochul challenging the 2019 law giving farm workers the right to organize (New York State Farm Laborers Fair Labor Practices Act of 2019 - FLFLPA). The Attorney General's office will be there representing the state of New York.
Monday, February 26, 7-9pm, at Canisius University Science Hall
(near Main and Delevan, and the metro station).
Title: Reports along the southern border.
Speakers: Lee Ann Grace and Howard Henry, who have volunteered for 30+ years with Frontera de Cristo, the Presbyterian Border Outreach Program at the Douglas AZ / Agua Prieta SONORA Mexico border. They are just back from helping at the Migrant Resource Center (MRC) in Agua Prieta, responding to the needs of migrants being returned back to Mexico by the US Border Patrol. The MRC provides food, clothing, first aid, toiletries, toilet access and showers, plus emergency sleeping accommodation. It continually struggles to maintain a dining shelter and refuge from the wind and the cold. Come learn what they saw there, and how to help. Free and open to the public.

San Carlos, AZ - On November 4, Christian faith leaders and religious people from across the country will make a pilgrimage to the Apache sacred site, Oak Flat. The Prayer Rising will bring together the prayers of Apache leaders, Christians, members of other Indigenous tribes, and people of various faiths and spiritualities to protect the air, water, land, and spirit of this sacred place from destruction through the proposed Resolution Copper Mine.
Rev. Dr. John Mendez, civil rights leader, retired pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church (Winston-Salem, North Carolina), and clergy activist with the Poor People’s Campaign, will travel from North Carolina to join other people of faith in prayer. He shared, “I've been involved for over 30 years with this struggle, and what affects one directly, affects all of us indirectly. So, it's not just the Apache struggle, it's all of our struggle: for clean water, for respect for all religions, and the continuous liberation and freedom of all Native people.”
