It’s SDG Action and Awareness Week!
Those unfamiliar might ask themselves: what are the SDG’s? Established by the UN in 2015, these 17 goals were created as a framework for global prosperity with a focus on responsible resource consumption and social equity. They are a “shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet now and into the future.” While ambitious, they promote large-scale globalization and the sharing of ideas connected to resource use and social equity, among other aspects. The generality of these goals is not meant to be misconstrued as the end all be all for sustainable development, but rather a structured system for individual goals to be blackboarded off of – they need to work in tandem in order to be effective. Within each goal is its own set of smaller goals that can be used to guide small-scale development. UB is proud to utilize this framework within our 10-in-10 Climate Action Plan!
Our Student Sustainability Impact Team are reminding people of proper recycling and waste management for the rest of the basketball season. If you see those blue jackets, say hi! And ask them all of your recycling, compost, and waste questions. GO BULLS 🤘

Celebrate the launch of our Campus Dryer Ball Pilot. Some of laundry rooms have been stocked with dryerballs for students to use, return, and share in their communities! Sustainable practice incorporates community!
If you happen to use them, tag us and let us know what you think! Make sure to return them when you are done, so we can bring these to more laundry rooms on our campus!
Sustainable Student Highlight:
One of our many wonderful student assistants, Nicole, was provided the opportunity to partake in a study abroad program in Costa Rica to explore the cultural sustainability that is inherent in many of the cultures that exist there. Be on the lookout over the next couple weeks as we post more about Nicole's experiences and observations!
“In this picture, we are walking around an agroforestry, showing us a complete juxtaposition to monoculture. The farmer grows a variety of crops from banana, cacao, star fruit, turmeric, and many more. He respects the land and stays away from adding any sorts of pesticide.”

The Student Sustainability Impact Team (SSIT) is finally here! ♻️
We created this program to increase visibility of our office and expand engagement with our student body by providing them the opportunity to perform visible, high impact work around campus. Comprising of 18 members, our team will work to fulfill sustainable requests by departments, units, and student clubs on campus. With this program, we will help UB reach its 10-in-10 goals sooner than later!
We invite you to browse our catalog of activities and services on our website, which you can find within the Linktree in our bio! 🔗
This is an exciting new pilot program that will expand the scope of our office in ways previously unattainable.
Welcome to the new way of achieving sustainable progress 🫶
Raffle for wrappers 🍬? This month, bring your candy wrappers to Wilkeson Coffeehouse for a chance at winning a Nintendo Switch! 🕹️
“Research shows that in the United States alone, more than 600 million pounds of candy are purchased each year for Halloween. The vast majority of candy wrappers end up in landfills due to an inability by most curbside recycling programs to recycle them.”
Some excellent shots of the Beane Center undergoing solar panel installation!
Due to either structural integrity concerns or preexisting systems, most of UB’s roofs are not able to handle paneled equipment, but the roof over Facilities headquarters is flat and structurally sound, making it the ideal candidate for solar power 🌞🔋

Tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day!
When you wear an orange shirt, you are recognizing the atrocities that the Canadian Residential School System had on indigenous communities as a result of forced assimilation. Stand in solidarity with our native friends on campus!

This post relates to SDG 2: Zero Hunger
The world produces enough food to feed everyone on this planet, so why are a quarter of people food insecure? Building sustainable, resilient food systems is a holistic way of combating many problems on our planet. About 25% of all greenhouse gas emissions come from food production. Agriculture is at the whim of our changing climate. Obesity and chronic illnesses are on the rise due to diet.
Be an active participant in your food system- learn about where your food comes from, its environmental impacts, and about concepts like “food justice” and “food sovereignty.
