City Honors School celebrates Class of 2024 City Honors School is celebrating its class of 2024 after a hosting a graduation ceremony at Kleinhans Music Hall on Thursday night.
We are saddened to share the news of the death of Mrs. Theresa Pope. Mrs. Pope served as an Assistant Principal at City Honors in the 1990s and her daughter Michea is a 1984 alum.
Her former students remember her as "tough but fair" and all knew that she really cared about them.
Her former colleague, Jim Duggan, stated that teachers who worked with her agreed that she was unfailingly fair and had the best interests of her students at heart. She never sought the limelight, but was one of the first to volunteer when assistance was needed.
The thoughts and prayers of the entire City Honors community are with the Pope family during this difficult time.
Theresa E. Pope, 80, teacher and assistant principal in Buffalo schools Jan. 8, 1944 – June 16, 2024

City Honors Students recently participated 5/14 Blue Flag Initiative in honor of the lives taken during the 5/14 Racially-Motivated Mass Shooting at Tops on Jefferson Avenue. The 5/14 Blue Flag Initiative is sponsored by the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. It is also a collaboration between the Mayor Byron W. Brown, the City of Buffalo Common Council, the Buffalo Public Schools, the CEPA Gallery, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and local artists Brandon Watson and Brendan Bannon
Students created blue cyanotype-design flags that will be hung throughout the city of Buffalo. Messages of hope and kindness were expressed both in written word and visual images in a one-of-a-kind photogram flag square. Thank you to CHS visual arts teachers Mrs. Dylewski, Ms. Moda and Mrs. Root for making this initiative possible for our students!
Kudos to a young and upstart CHS team that captured third place at the All-High co****le championships today! 🌽 🏆 🌽 These guys will be training intensively and refining their game in the months to come, ready to compete again at a high level next season! Congrats also to Emerson which won the overall title and McKinely which took 2nd. All three teams will be recognized at an upcoming Board of Education meeting and presented with team plaques.

In just its first season of varsity competition, BPS Girls Lax, which includes quite a few Centaurs, turned heads with victories over Niagara Falls, Springville and two wins over Depew and Newfane each. Last week the Bison held their senior night at a sun-soaked All-High Stadium. Congrats to all of our senior founders who built an IMPORTANT opportunity for young women in our city for years to come! Good luck to these exceptional BPS athletes in sectionals! Buffalo Athletics
A thrilling 9-8 overtime win for BPS Varsity Lax tonight over East Rochester under the lights ! There was no quit in the Bison tonight! Congrats to all of our Centaurs who join with their fellow BPS students to comprise this team. Good luck in sectionals boys! Buffalo Athletics

Yesterday the BPS champion Centuar boys tennis team advanced to the sectional team quarterfinals after a 5-0 win over Roy-Hart only to be stopped in a hard fought 1-4 battle with top ranked small school Lew-Port again this year. The team has had an excellent season and captured its second consecutive BPS title this year 🎾🔥Good luck to our boys playing in the BPS doubles tournament this week and all the boys who will be headed to individual sectionals to represent BPS the following week. Thank you to Coach Holly Follett for teaching and challenging our boys this year!
It was an incredibly moving night for Centaur baseball as we honored our graduating seniors AND the City Honors 1986 sectional championship team. The current team posted a big win over McKinley prior to festivities. Centaurs of both generations connected over their love for the game and their school. Thank you to Coach McMahon for organizing the evening and to Coach Grandits for igniting the CHS baseball tradition that still burns strong today!
Mrs. Root and IB Art Juniors Summer Klinshaw, Charlotte Lester and Taylor Shepherd were among a handful of BPS students district wide to participate in “The Artifacts of Us” an event at the Westin Hotel led by Buffalo philanthropist Alice Jacobs and State Assembly Majority Leader Crystal People-Stokes, celebrating the Smithsonian Women’s American History Museum which we will see in the National Mall in years to come. Guests of the event brought an artifact inspired by women in their lives and our artists were tasked with using these items to create a collage live at the event! Who knows, maybe this piece and our CHS students will have a place in the Smithsonian one day!

Earlier this week our 5th graders participated in a special CHS spring tradition on Fosdick Field by tie-dyeing their Cardinal Craze Week class tshirts with the help of our senior class. Our 5th graders add many of their future class colors to their shirts while for our seniors, this represents handing the torch to the next generation of Centaurs. Thank you to Mia Kiristis ‘24 and all of the senior class volunteers who helped to organize this fun morning for our 5th graders!
