Artur Verbov | Business 💼
Going to school in a new place can be nerve-wracking, especially if you’re not used to speaking the language. Coming to Buffalo State from his home in Kazakhstan after studying English for less than 2 years, business major Artur Verbov experienced this challenge first-hand. 🗺️
During his first few months at Buffalo State, Artur found it difficult to keep up with his language skills, but his professors were here to support him. Artur let his professors know about his language concerns upfront, and they worked with him throughout the semester to ensure he received necessary support to learn not only the material being taught but allow him to become more confident with his English language skills as well.
💬 One of the professors Artur says had an impact on him is his writing professor, Leslie Bennett. “Artur began the semester with major concerns about his ability to understand, speak, and write in English,” explained Professor Bennett. “He briefly faded away, feeling overwhelmed, but responded so well to coaching and office hours, really poured himself into his work, and finished the semester strong with an A that was truly well deserved.”
Congratulations, Artur, keep up the great work!

Jade Hayslett | Fashion Merchandising 🛍️
“Jade Hayslett has experienced a transformative journey during her time at Buffalo State, reconnecting with herself and delving into previously unexplored passions. While always aspiring to be creative, she initially struggled to identify a specific field of interest, ranging from film to fashion.
Despite her love for fashion in her earlier years, the limitations of her hometown hindered her exploration of this passion. However, her introduction to the field of fashion merchandising during her first year as a TFA major at Buffalo State altered her perspective on her college experience. The popularity of the fashion department both on campus and in Buffalo caught her attention.
Jade actively participated in photoshoots, fashion shows, and contributed to runway events, cultivating a deep love for fashion that surpassed her initial expectations. The vibrant, creative environment in Buffalo provided her with a sense of belonging and clarity. Consequently, Jade has now embraced her passion and officially declared herself a fashion merchandising major.”

Leann Shaw | Africana Studies ✊🏾
“Leann Shaw, an Africana Studies major specializing in Urban Civic Education at Buffalo State, has embarked on a unique academic journey. Having previously explored seven other majors and attended two different colleges, she eventually found her academic home within Africana Studies at Buffalo State. The relevance of the courses to her identity as a young Black woman proved to be a defining factor.
Through her courses, Leann gained a deeper understanding of herself, her surroundings, and the journey that led her to where she is today. The meaningful education provided by well-versed and passionate professors facilitated a transformation from a passive observer to an active leader on campus.
Leann has embraced roles in clubs such as NAACP and The Caribbean Students Organization, finding spaces that resonate with her identity. Each class and club attendance has contributed to shaping Leann into a passionate young adult dedicated to personal success and making a positive impact on society and the world.”
