"Our attention switches every 45 seconds, according to Gloria Mark, informatics professor at the University of California, Irvine. By 9 a.m., I had more tabs, emails, calls, plans, lists — while also listening to a story and taking a survey. I was caught up in the process of consuming."

Happy birthday to Alice Walker!

Happy 72nd birthday to literary pioneer, Alice Walker!

In 1982, Walker published her most celebrated work, “The Color Purple", and became the first African American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for Literature and the National Book Award for Fiction.

Her works, which are deeply influenced by Zora Neale Hurston, focuses on the telling of Black women's stories. In fact, because of Hurston's influence, it was Walker who helped pay for Hurston's headstone, which had been left unmarked for over 10 years.

“In my work and in myself I reflect Black people, women and men, as I reflect others. One day even the most self-protective ones will look into the mirror I provide and not be afraid.”

Ms. Walker, thank you for honoring those that came before you, and inspiring all those that will come after. Happy Birthday!
