Below you’ll find a list in descending order of the most acidic foods one can consume. Acidic foods can wreak havoc on tooth enamel over time, leading to enamel erosion and making your teeth more susceptible to cavities and sensitivity.

Look for one of these three ADA accepted toothpastes containing stannous fluoride; scientifically proven to help prevent and reduce enamel erosion 🦷

Another non-biased opinion of a newer dental product as a dental professional:

The Autobrush!

This mouthguard-like brushing device promises to clean your mouth 27x better than a regular manual toothbrush in a fraction of the time. Patients only need to place Autobrush in their mouth and wiggle from right to left for 30 seconds. With electric and manual options, adult and child-sized devices, let’s go over the pros and cons of this product:

Pros:
-May be much more beneficial for intellectually/physically disabled individuals who have a hard time with proper technique of a regular manual toothbrush or electric brush
-May be more beneficial for children whose parents may not be able to supervise their children brushing their teeth with a regular manual or electric brush to ensure proper technique
-For children: manual, sonic, and sonic pro options are available
-sonic version offering one cleaning mode and a 30 second brushing song
-sonic pro version offering LED red and blue lights for gum health and teeth whitening (early research has been promising as a plaque suppression agent and mild whitener), 30 second brushing song, and 3 different cleaning modes (care mode for everyday brushing, massage mode for gentle brushing/massaging gums, and deep cleaning mode which alternates low and high frequency vibrations which causes the Autobrush bristles to move back and forth for a deeper cleaning action)
-Autobrush refill heads are available in a variety of sizes ranging from ages 3 - adult with a helpful sizing guide on their website based on present/missing adult teeth and milimeter measurements

Cons:
-Even with their 50% off sale, these devices range from $32 for a kids manual autobrush to $74 for an adult sonic pro autobrush
-There were only two very limited (20 participants) studies done to make the Autobrush’s claim of 27x better plaque removal and both of them I personally found to be flawed and therefore unfortunately unreliable
-Brush heads for the Autobrush are recommended to be replaced every 2 months as opposed to every 3 months for a regular manual toothbrush, brush head refills range from $20-$24 on sale with no price distinction between kids and adult sizes (as compared to $10 for a sonicare electric toothbrush refill head)
-The Autobrush sonic device itself has had some bad media feedback regarding it dying and needing to be replaced after 2 or so years
-There is a money back guarantee but only for unopened boxes, no other refunds will be given if your child or loved one or yourself does not like it
-May not be the best option for elderly patients who are missing teeth because this device may be missing brushing tooth surfaces where teeth are missing, more studies would need to be done

SmileDirectClub shuts down after filing for bankruptcy | CNN Business 12/10/2023

Feel awful for all of the people who chose to go to smile direct club instead of an actual dentist for their ortho treatments.

The company states that those customers who have started treatment but haven’t finished are encouraged to go to a dentist office to “complete” their treatment. The sad reality of the situation is that no dentist is going to want to touch any of these patients because their ortho was not started properly. Patients still wishing to straighten their teeth will need to visit a legitimate dentist to start the process all over again the proper way.

Gum Health Starts Here. 12/09/2023

Honest no-nonsense opinion as a hygienist on a product that popped up on my feed:

Pros:
-flexible rubber bristles stimulate gum tissue, increasing blood flow and making gums healthier and more resilient to bacteria, much like a rubber-tipped gum stimulator
-rubber bristles do not collect bacteria unlike nylon bristles
-more effective at cleaning the tongue than a nylon-bristled toothbrush
-rubber bristles will not fray and become less effective unlike nylon bristles

Cons:
-still recommended to be changed out every 3 months like a nylon-bristled toothbrush
-studies only show slight improvement in gum health after 6 months use as compared to use of a nylon-bristled toothbrush
-more expensive than a typical nylon-bristled toothbrush ($16)

Overall, this toothbrush looks promising for people who have irritated gums and recession as caused by aggressive toothbrushing. As always it’s recommended to supplement toothbrushing with flossing to best prevent irritated gums and recession.

Saltwater Rinse Benefits for Oral Health and How to Make It 03/17/2023

Did you know about the many benefits of rinsing with warm salt water?

A saltwater rinse can be performed 3-4x per week to fight bad breath, reduce bacteria, protect against gum disease, aid in healing a toothache, and aid in healing a tooth extraction site. More frequent rinses are not advised as they can lead to irritation and can harm tooth enamel.

The traditional ratio is 1 tsp salt to 8 oz water. See the article for more tips and instructions.

Saltwater Rinse Benefits for Oral Health and How to Make It Saltwater rinses can be helpful in improving dental health in several ways like reducing bacteria and plaque, and preventing infection following a dental procedure.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes the importance of oral health in children and has made the following recommendations.

Juice often has extra sugar added in addition to the natural sugar from the fruit itself. Even if a juice is 100% fruit, the process of making it rids it of valuable fiber, which helps to slow down the speed that the sugar is absorbed into the bloodstream. Eating whole fruit, however, is encouraged as it will not contribute to higher blood sugar levels.

As Hertel Ave and neighboring side streets continue to be cleaned up after the blizzard, NBD errs on the side of caution and will continue to be closed through today, Thursday December 29th.

12/27/2022

We have decided to stay closed through tomorrow, Wednesday December 28th, due to the continued poor state of the roads. Everybody stay safe out there!

Everyone who had scheduled appointments tomorrow will be called and cancelled and will be called back to reschedule as soon as we’re able to get into the office.

12/26/2022

I hope everyone is safe and warm today!

The boss has made the call to keep the office closed tomorrow, Tuesday December 27th, due to the condition of the roads and the state of our staff and patients’ driveways and houses.

Dr Vogt has decided to take it day by day to decide when it’ll be safe enough to reopen. Currently most of our staff are still stuck in their houses/driveways.

Those of you who had appointments tomorrow will be called to cancel and will be called back to reschedule as soon as we’re open again.
