Building a Landscape with Color and Texture
Thursday, October 3rd, 2024. 8:30AM - 5:00PM
Cost: $310 + $70 materials fee
Beginner/Intermediate level
This workshop is for artists who want to explore a variety of mosaic techniques to create a representational landscape utilizing different traditional materials, e.g. glass, stone, shells and metal. Beginning with a short presentation and exercises to illustrate general principles, the discussion considers perspective foreground and background and light source highlights and shadows. Using your imagination you will create a finished 11” x14” mosaic.
The beauty of this workshop is that the artist gets to surround themselves and then get to play with a variety of tesserae to complete their mosaic. The workshop emphasizes a hands-on exploration of mosaic techniques. This allows the artist to discover different textures, color combinations and ways to transition and form relationships with mixed materials.
Throughout the workshop individual attention and tips are provided to help with the technical aspects of mosaics and to guide the successful completion of each project.

Winter 23-24 SGQ Feature Friday!
Our first feature is A Living Colour of Light: Yvonne Williams
By: Cody C. Barteet & Iraboty Kazi
Yvonne Williams, a prolific stained glass artist based in Toronto, underwent training at the Ontario College of Art and continued refining her skills through apprenticeships and studies in Europe and the United States. In 1949, she established a permanent studio, completing over four hundred commissions in the following three decades. Her work at St. Michael and All Angels church exemplified her evolving style, fusing medieval influences with modern abstract designs and vibrant jewel tones. Departing from Victorian realism, Williams's innovative approach influenced the modernization of stained glass in North America.

We are thrilled to announce Peter Cormack as our Keynote Speaker for the SGAA 113th Annual Conference - Sand to Sash: Kansas City 2024!
Peter Cormack is a noted scholar of 19th- and 20th-century British and American stained glass, William Morris, and the Arts and Crafts Movement. His book Arts and Crafts Stained Glass was the first study of how the late-19th-century Arts and Crafts Movement transformed the aesthetics and production of stained glass in Britain and America. Gloriously illustrated, and based on more than three decades of research, it quickly sold out of its first printing and has been an invaluable resource to the entire community.
His new book, Charles J. Connick: America’s Visionary Stained Glass Artist, is the
first comprehensive account of Connick’s career, documenting his childhood in rural Pennsylvania and impoverished upbringing in industrial Pittsburgh, his early training in stained glass and his self-education as a master craftsman, leading to his independent career in Boston where he became part of a movement committed to ‘Modern Gothic’ design and architecture.
