"As we look upon the Russian invasion of Ukraine with disbelief, anguish and horror, our thoughts are with the Ukrainian people and the extended Ukrainian family across our community, across our nation and around the world. In the moments and days ahead, we will continue to watch and hope that Russia will deescalate its rhetoric and violent actions, and retreat from the sovereign nation of Ukraine.

The University at Buffalo community stands in solidarity with Ukraine for their inalienable right to remain as a free republic and to live peacefully without fear of oppression by military invasion. Sound off in the comments for Courtney Wheelock! Courtney is a 3rd year Exercise and Nutrition Sciences PhD student celebrating a huge achievement: she has won the coveted Zale Perry Scholarship presented by the Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences!

"I wanted to apply because I thought it fit perfectly into my scuba diving hobby and research in hyperbaric dive physiology here at UB. I fall into the category studying diving medicine, so with the award money I plan to enroll in a Physician's Training in Hyperbaric Medicine course which is offered in San Diego every year by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society so that I can get additional training in hyperbaric medicine. I think this will really help me push my research and career forward and eventually be able to significantly contribute to underwater dive operations, so I'm very excited about it!"

To learn more about PhD options at UB to follow in Courtney's footsteps, check out the UB ENS website: http://publichealth.buffalo.edu/exercise-and-nutrition-sciences.html. We now offer both an Exercise Science PhD as well as a Nutrition PhD, so your options to explore are unlimited!

A message from President Satish Tripathi on the Derek Chauvin trial verdict:

"Dear university community,

A few moments ago, we all learned the verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial. This landmark trial has been viewed as a referendum on police accountability and brutality against Black and Brown Americans—and, as such, it has been closely followed by millions of people demanding the abiding structural change that is long overdue in our country.

Of course, the deep-seated hurt, sadness and anger that George Floyd’s murder evoked cannot be wiped away with the reading of a guilty verdict. It is my ardent hope that as we pause and reflect on the verdict, we consider how we can transform this moment in our collective history into a turning point for genuine reconciliation and change: change in our hearts, our minds, our practices, our systems.

As I have said before, we at UB can actively contribute to transformative change through our mission and its expression in our education, our research, scholarship and creative activities, and our engagement with one another and the many communities we serve.

Together, as a university community, we must continue working toward the ideals of social justice, recognizing that achieving them will lead to a brighter future for those who have been marginalized and disenfranchised throughout our country’s history—and for our nation as a whole."

A message from President Satish Tripathi:

Over the past several weeks, the public has turned its attention to the trial of the former Minneapolis police officer accused of killing George Floyd. Now, with the prosecution and defense having rested, the concluding phase of the trial is set to begin.

Although we could have anticipated that these proceedings would prove emotionally draining for anyone following them, the deeply disturbing evidence and wrenching testimony have borne a heavier psychological toll on many of our Black students, colleagues, peers, friends and neighbors. Against the backdrop of a fervent racial justice reckoning, demonstrations over police brutality against Black and Brown Americans, a pandemic that has magnified social injustice, and oppression that has persisted from our country’s founding, I understand that some of you may be feeling as traumatized in the retelling of this terrible episode as when you first learned of it.

When I talk to our students, I hear anxiety, sadness and raw frustration over a system that continues to allow this violence to happen—most recently resulting in the heartbreaking deaths of Adam Toledo and Daunte Wright. When I meet with our faculty and staff, they echo the same sense of dismay over the power structures that perpetuate racism and brutality. What you tell me—directly and indirectly—is that you are demanding change. I hear the urgency in your voice, and I share your insistence that action is overdue.

As a scholarly community, we seek to create change through our research, our education and our engagement with the communities we serve. We all recognize that it will take great effort, innovation, compassion and ingenuity if we are to topple systemic racism and disrupt this cycle of senseless tragedy, and we embrace the challenge. Not for self-congratulatory purposes. Not because we view ourselves as uniquely positioned to answer this call. We do it because it is unequivocally the right thing to do.

I am constantly considering how our university community can most effectively serve as an agent of change. As I write to you, I acknowledge that there is so much to be done. Truly, our work is far from over. But we are making progress, and I am proud of the action we have taken thus far. It shows me that, when we approach this task in solidarity, with a mandate to uproot discrimination and intolerance, we can help cultivate, in the words of Martin Luther King Jr., “a society at peace with itself—a society that can live with its conscience.”

I hope our ongoing endeavors to achieve social justice instill in you a sense of hope that we are moving toward a more equitable and inclusive society. I also hope our work provides you with a measure of optimism for a brighter, more just future—for UB, and for our world.

If you are in need of emotional support at this time, if you would like to join in a discussion about the trial, or if you are seeking ways to help your students process this consequential moment, we have resources for everyone in our UB community.

Allow me to emphasize that we are a community that is stronger by virtue of our diverse viewpoints, backgrounds and identities. Although not all of us carry the trauma of systemic racism, it is my greatest wish that we stand together in the effort to overcome it. This commitment is core to our identity as a scholarly community. It is etched into our university’s mission. We have no intention, or desire, to pay lip service to the ideals of social justice. Throughout UB’s 175-year history, we have always channeled our ideas into action in service of the greater good.

That is our unifying constant. And that will be the case long after the verdict is read in the trial of Derek Chauvin—indeed, for as long as it takes.

Sincerely,

Satish K. Tripathi
President

"Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have seen a deeply disturbing spike in incidents of hatred and violence against Asians and Asian Americans in our country. With this week’s horrific shootings in Atlanta of eight people, including six women of Asian descent, this has intensified the concern and fear already reverberating across the Asian and Asian American communities. We stand in sorrow and solidarity with our students, faculty and staff of Asian descent. Moreover, as a global community of scholars grounded in ideals of social justice, we condemn, in the strongest of terms, anti-Asian harassment, hatred and violence—just as we condemn the ignorance, prejudice and bigotry at their root.

At UB, we are incredibly fortunate to count a large—and growing—number of students, faculty and staff of Asian descent as members of our university community. In fact, Asian and Asian American students comprise a significant percentage of our student enrollment. We have strong international partnerships with 40 universities in Asia—and some of these collaborations date back 40 years. Going back even further in our institutional history, UB’s first students from Asia attended our medical school in the 19th century.

Throughout this time, we have always treasured UB’s Asian and Asian American communities for their diversity of intellectual perspective, the cultural richness they share with our campus community and their critical contributions to pressing societal issues. At this moment, sadly, one of the most troubling issues is xenophobia. That is why it is imperative that we at UB reaffirm, and recommit to, our mission and identity as a university grounded in principles of inclusion, diversity and social justice.

We know that we can effect positive and lasting change through the education of our students, our research, our creative activities, and our collective commitment to the greater good. UB must always serve as a beacon of hope. By harnessing our mission of excellence, we can overcome ignorance and the stigmatization, divisiveness and hostility that it breeds.

To our entire UB community—and to our Asian and Asian American communities in particular, let me reiterate: Hate has no haven at UB. We will never allow xenophobia to gain traction on our campus. We are here for you, we stand with you, and we deeply value all of your contributions to our campus community." - President Satish Tripathi
