It can be easy to notice all of things we don’t have control of in our lives- the weather, traffic, long lines in the grocery store, etc. It’s probably harder to try to recognize all of the things we DO have control of, even the tiny things✨looking at something that brings you joy, eating your favorite snack, calling your best friend, etc✨What are some things within your control today that maybe you haven’t noticed yet?

It can be so easy to put others before ourselves, but that’s doing a disservice to our own needs. When you’re on a plane, they say to put your oxygen mask on first and then help those around you. The same can be said about daily life. It’s okay to put yourself first so that you CAN be there for others🩵

It is important to know which behaviors strengthen or weaken intimacy in a relationship, especially habitual, subtle patterns like these that insidiously erode connection and drive partners apart.

How enticing? Honestly, it makes sense why we focus on them, or downplay things from our past, or fantasize about a change that will resolve the stuff we're dealing with in partnership. But what I've learned over the last 17 years as a therapist is that the above (plus some) helps us all stay stuck. Let me be very clear: sometimes the other person IS engaging in problematic behavior (and it calls for our attention), sometimes we are in a relationship that we ought to exit, sometimes looking back at our past is deeply confronting. But if we only focus on the above it takes us and our personal responsibility, healing, and empowerment out of the equation. What has kept you stuck in the past? What would you add to the list?

ℹ️🌿 Loneliness – Silent Stalker (Part 2) |

While it is impossible to find the root of how loneliness became the epidemic today, several cultural impacts have exacerbated it.

Expansion and mobilization have had significant impacts on loneliness. In the 1800s, as American emigrants trekked westward, population centers diminished, breaking up families/social bonds and spreading people coast to coast in a relatively short time. Mass casualty events, most notably wars have resulted in more than a million American deaths.

When discussing loneliness, it is important to realize that several unique types can afflict people at almost any time.

Let’s review the most prominent four of them: https://cptsdfoundation.org/2024/03/18/loneliness-silent-stalker-part-2/

Sometimes we can resolve things together, and other times the gift is in finding the resolution apart. I know this can be a hard pill to swallow at times, especially when failure is so easily associated with relational endings. But not all relationships are designed for people to stay together. Some relationships are designed to teach, to reveal, to remind. Some relationships are designed to hold up the mirror so that you as an individual can learn something about yourself. Some relationships are designed for you to come back into contact with old wounds, old pain, and begin to write a new story for yourself. Some relationships are designed to end so that you can step into empowerment. Some relationships are designed to end so you can finally exercise boundaries. This post isn’t about recommending an easy way out. I am a big believer in moving through the hard stuff in relationships, but we must not operate with the belief that every relationship, with just enough commitment and dedication, will have a happily ever after ending.
