Green Eggs and Ham is a great children’s book. It shows invitation with persistence.
When I think about “multiplying Jesus followers,” I must admit the first thing I think about is “How?”
For Sam I Am, its about the place, the activity, the company that would attract this discerning and very reluctant guy to try Green Eggs and Ham.
Let’s face it…. Today having someone unchurched or nonchurched try “the church” is like offering, well…. not “Green Eggs and Ham,” but “Powerderkegs and Sham!”
Yeah, the church has recently spent a lot of press trying to blow itself up. Or showcasing those hypocritical, power-grabbing leaders who always make it big in church leadership circles -- until they are brought low by scandal or farce.
I find this story to be a great parable for the church. Sam I Am could represent “sam”ples of the Great I Am…. That would be you and me! We are the only indication of the Body of Christ and the Reign of God in our midst that some people will ever see. Grumpy Skeptic could be any pre-churched or de-churched person in our midst.
Because Sam I Am focuses on “how,” it is only when Discerning/Reluctant Guy is worn down that he finally tries the fare being offered.
What if Sam I Am focused on the “why!” Why should we try this outrageous and visually unappealing meal?
What if Sam I Am focused on the guy? What if he called the guy by name?
What if when being called to multiply followers of Jesus, we focused on our “Why?”
What if we shared important information like, “I became a Jesus follower when ….”
Or “I follow Christ because…..”
The Scriptures are full of reasons to follow Jesus. If we were passionate about our “why,” I’m sure we would have multitudes of fresh and excited converts! Followers who know that our “why” is important. Followers who know Jesus! Who “know, grow, serve, and sow to empower disciples to re-present Christ to others!”
I follow Jesus because he loves so perfectly that he gave his life to save a wretch like me! And he asks that I love others as he loves me! I’m all in! How about you!

Thinking about how the "Character of a Methodist" was born from the journey of a person whose doubts and fears and strangely-warmed heart and courage and persistence gives hope to each of us! In keeping with the tone of the class meetings he instituted, I ask us to consider, "Did the bible live in me today?" I pray so! And I am thankful for the struggles and triumphs of God's faithful that instruct my own journey!
