So worth it

01/05/2024

Grief doesn’t always come out in tears. It often comes out in the way you have expressed other challenges in your life——denial, anger, depression, illness, isolation, frustration, sarcasm, bitterness, laughter, worry and more that I can’t think of right now.

What to do about it?
It starts with self awareness - How did you express yourself and how did you manage your feelings before grief took over.

Once you recognize your life tools you can then see how they are magnified in your grief. Just recognizing what you are doing is the first step to saying “Oh, that is my grief speaking, that is my grief reacting”.

"the antidote".

12/20/2023

My guides have said that grief is going to be (they've said this for a few years) a big theme this decade. And I think we're already seeing it. Whether it's the grief of the changes that you're seeing going on, whether it's the grief of some of the world events that people are being impacted by, or your own. Maybe you are being impacted in your world right now or people around you are.

But it's interesting, they've been saying this a lot lately to understand that grief, actually, is the creation of something new. It is not just the finishing point of something old. And they say that because our human minds and the way that we as a society tend to approach grief, it's old and it's heavy and it needs updating. So, by all means, we should cry our eyes out and feel all our feelings but not just in a way that keeps us staring at the floor and thinking that loss is not also a birth. And that's the message that they want to get across. Grief transforms into the new.

Look for me

I'm here

in the glint of your eyes
and the lilt of your laugh

Close your eyes
there I am
where the lights glow
soft and warm

In the quiet moments
where your thoughts
drift

And in your dreams
late
late
at night

Look for me

In those moments
when you think you're alone
and you take a deep breath

and wonder

"Where have you gone?"

I'm here
by your side
holding your hand
loving you as I always have
and will

forever more

Sometimes life feels heavy and hard, and everything going on in the world feels like too much. If for whatever reason you’re having a hard time right now, know that you’re not alone and we’re sending you a hug. 🩷

Up the dog bounds to the window, baying
like a basset his doleful, tearing sounds
from the belly, as if mourning a dead king,
and now he's howling like a beagle — yips, brays,
gagging growls — and scratching the sill paintless,
that's how much he's missed you, the two of you,
both of you, mother and daughter, my wife
and child. All week he's curled at my feet,
warming himself and me watching more TV,
or wandered the lonely rooms, my dog shadow,
who like a poodle now hops, amped-up windup
maniac yo-yo with matted curls and snot nose
smearing the panes, having heard another car
like yours taking its grinding turn down
our block, or a school bus, or bird-squawk,
that's how much he's missed you, good dog,
companion dog, dog-of-all-types, most excellent dog
I told you once and for all we should never get.

Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery welcomes pet companions to attend their loved one's burials since they mourn much like people do. A dog's presence can also break the tension and lower anxiety during a burial. "We recommend anyone who wishes to include their pet during a service to check in advance with the responsible party that is coordinating with cemetery staff."

Have you ever seen an animal companion attend a funeral before? ❤️🐾

“When we die,” asked Rabbit, “where do we go?”
“Into the hearts of those who have loved us most.” said Bear. “That way we’re together forever.”

“That looks heavy.” said Rabbit.
“What’s that?” asked Bear.
“Your thoughts.” replied Rabbit. “Let me hold them with you for a while.”
“Then we’ll both have heavy thoughts.” said Bear.
“No.” said Rabbit. “Between the two of us, they shouldn’t weigh near as much.”

I have learned in my many years as a therapist the stark difference just one day can hold. I have counseled one individual who is bursting with joy because they are becoming a grandfather, to the next hour holding space for a young mom who is in her thirties diagnosed with cancer. I’m often aware when I’m having an ordinary day doing errands, that I’m likely surrounded by someone who is navigating difficult news or heartwrenching loss. The preciousness of an ordinary day is oftentimes not appreciated enough; those days where we feel more content.

Priceless moments include days that are not laden with intense grief anniversaries, pain from disease, worry about a family member, etc. It’s important to also give grace to others who may not act in their best way. We just never know if our ordinary day is another’s worst one. Today, honor all of your hard days, and celebrate the more ordinary. If you have been through really difficult experiences in this life, you appreciate a day where peace is more present. My hope for each of you is that during difficult days, you have someone to walk you through. Our days ebb and flow…. Wishing you peace, my friends.
