Today the Surgeon General issues a new advisory about the effects of social media use on youth mental health. “The most common question parents ask me is, ‘is social media safe for my kids’. The answer is that we don't have enough evidence to say it's safe, and in fact, there is growing evidence that social media use is associated with harm to young people’s mental health,” said U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. “Children are exposed to harmful content on social media, ranging from violent and sexual content, to bullying and harassment. And for too many children, social media use is compromising their sleep and valuable in-person time with family and friends. We are in the middle of a national youth mental health crisis, and I am concerned that social media is an important driver of that crisis – one that we must urgently address.”

'There is no dad in our family': How parents have helped their kids navigate questions about their households 03/28/2023

Angela Tucker, transracial adoptee, author and educator points to the WISE Up model developed by the Center for Adoption Support and Education, which was designed for adoptive situations but works well for any family facing undue scrutiny:

1- Walk away: Kids can choose to ignore what was said or heard. They don’t owe anyone a response if they don’t want to.

2- It’s private: It’s important for kids to know that they are not indebted to anyone. Just because the world is nosy about families who don’t fit the mold does not mean those families are obligated to satisfy that curiosity.

3- Share something: If they want, kids can share something about their adoption story. It can be a small detail, such as where they were born or something they like about being adopted.

4- Educate: Instead of getting personal, kids can educate the asker about adoption in general.
WISE Up! and other adoption and foster care publications can be purchased at www.adoptionsupport.org.

'There is no dad in our family': How parents have helped their kids navigate questions about their households Kids who come from adoptive, multiethnic or LGBTQ families are often fielding uncomfortable questions — but don't owe anyone an explanation.

C.A.S.E. closes out Black History Month by honoring Dorothy Pitman Hughes - born 1938, is a social welfare advocate, feminist and African-American activist. When she was 10 years old, her father was beaten and left for dead, a crime the family believes was committed by Ku Klux Klan members. She decided as a child that she would devote her life to activism. Hughes owned and operated three early childcare centers, and an office supply business in Harlem. She co-founded the New York City Agency for Child Development, providing child welfare services, education services and juvenile justice services. In addition, Hughes organized the first shelter for battered women in New York City and co-founded the New York City Agency for Child Development, pioneering child-care and noting that "too many women were being forced to leave their children home alone while they worked to feed their families". Pitman Hughes also co-founded with Gloria Steinem the Women's Action Alliance, a pioneering national information center that specialized in nonsexist, multiracial children's education, in 1971. The two women toured together speaking about race, class and gender throughout the 1970s.

Join us Tuesday, March 7th, as we welcome author Matthew Anthony, Afro-Surrealist theopoet, essayist, adoptee, and host of The Little Did U Know podcast, as he reads powerful material centering the voices of impacted people, while challenging the listener to examine the humanity of existing systems related to adoption and race.
Having been displaced from their family as infants via closed private transnational adoption, the bodies of Matthew and his twin were purchased, & trafficked into a sundown town. Matthew’s work is rooted in a lovegrief which persists and is wholly interested and invested in co-creating Black (Adoptee) Futures wherein we are not under siege by those who claim Whiteness. Matthew Anthony is an Afro-Surrealist theopoet , essayist, & host of little did u know: an abolitionist podcast that seeks to reveal the precarity inherent in transnational/racial adoption and dream of a new future by centering the voices of impacted people.

Today C.A.S.E. honors Marian Wright Edelman - born 1939, is a steadfast advocate for children’s rights. She graduated from Yale Law School and became the first Black woman to be admitted to the Mississippi Bar in 1964. In addition to working on racial justice and civil rights issues, she helped establish the Head Start Program, giving low-income families access to important early childhood programs and services.
In 1973, Edelman founded the Children’s Defense Fund, eventually persuading Congress to overhaul foster care, support adoption, improve childcare and better protect children who have a disability, are experiencing homelessness or have experienced abuse or neglect.

Today C.A.S.E. honors Carrie Steele Logan. Mrs. Logan worked as an individual to care for abandoned children, first in her own home and later in orphanage she built by selling her house. Her orphan home founded in 1888 still exists today in Atlanta, Georgia as a private institution renamed the Carrie Steele-Pitt Group Home. Mrs. Steele worked as a maid in an Atlanta railroad station. When children were abandoned in the train cars, she began rescuing and caring for them. Mrs. Steele was not as prominent as Janie Porter Barrett or Fredericka Douglass Sprague Perry and did not use African American club women to help her set up her orphanage.

Today, for Black History Month C.A.S.E honors Dr. Sheryl Brissett Chapman, Ed.D., LHD, Ed.M., MSW, ACSW.
A passionate advocate and internationally recognized expert in child and family welfare. During her 29-year tenure at The National Center for Children and Families, Dr. Chapman has stewarded NCCF from a small, local orphanage to a nationally accredited organization, with a multimillion dollar budget.
A recipient of both a doctorate from the Harvard School of Education and a nonprofit executive certificate from the Stanford School of Business, as chief executive, she provides overall agency administrative oversight and consultative guidance for all programs. Dr. Chapman has more than 40 years of experience, collaborating and leading national, state and local human services programs, including de-institutionalizing the juvenile justice systems in New York City and the District of Columbia, establishing a child protection system in the Pacific Basin, addressing the status of African American children and youth in the public child welfare and homeless systems, guiding best practices for hospital based assessment and multidisciplinary intervention of victims of child sexual abuse and other maltreatment, as examples. Dr. Chapman is a tireless, and compassionate champion and advocate for those children and families in need within our community and is the lead author of a pending book publication by NASW Press, based on research on two hundred Black male youth placed in public systems in Maryland and the District of Columbia. As Trustee Emerita of her alma mater, Brown University, in 2019, she received an honorary doctorate of humane letters for her advocacy and nonprofit innovation.
