Selma Youth Fundraiser 2024 Selma teens stepping up to change their iconic community through the arts and now raising money to go to Boston to perform in summer 2024.
What we are up to:
Alabama was a force of change in the 1960's that accelerated voting rights in America that shifted our democracy. While hundreds of thousands of people visit it for a few hours each year, this rural town has struggled terribly with education and poverty. Our organization of performing artists and filmmakers have been working with teenagers there to develop their ability to express themselves positively through dance and poetry. They have transformed from dejected to hopeful about changing themselves and their town. To complete their experience, we have invited them to tour with our troupe in June. We will be spending a week in New England and then stops in NYC and Washington DC on their return home. IndiePix Films is co-producing a documentary with us about this project that will be streaming on multiple platforms in 2025.

A SUMMER INITIATIVE TO TURN THE CORNER ON RACISM IN BOSTON “It starts with acknowledgement and having truthful conversations.”
The next new director joining the beheard.world family is Kat Everett, a social justice advocate, curator, mediator, and writer who will be overseeing beheard’s workshop division.
Kat brings tremendous experience in social services and in bringing the arts to public and alternative schools. Kat also masterfully facilitates many of the discussions that follow beheard.world’s performances and film screenings.
For the past 11 years, Kat has developed DEI workshops across the country. We’re so grateful to have her knowledge and expertise as part of the beheard team!
Our team is growing! We’re thrilled that Mishella is now heading beheard’s education division.
In the role, she’ll be overseeing youth workshops, the Teach-Mentor-Inspire programs, and more upcoming pilot projects that use the arts to advance academic and creative achievement in K-12 learners.
Mishella received a citation from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for Outstanding Executive Leadership, signed by Governor Baker in 2019.
Our film, Invisible Imprints, has been making waves and pushing beheard.world’s goal of confronting racism through the arts across the film festival circuit.
Recently, the film received Best Documentary Feature at the LA Sun Film Festival and secured a nomination for Best Documentary Short at the IndieX Film Fest. The work has also received laurels from the Miami Indie Film Awards and the Socially Relevant Film Festival New York. We can’t wait to see where this powerful work goes next. Find a screening near you at our website, beheard.world.
