MYTH: Hospice is only available in the last few days of life.
FACT: Hospice is available at any point that a physician certifies that a person has a life-limiting illness and life expectancy is 6 months or less. People live an average of 29 days longer in hospice care than alternative forms of end-of-life care (and often with more comfort, dignity and peace).

Julia Goolsby Holmes
March 13, 1949- August 26, 2024

Julia Goolsby Holmes, 75, died Monday, August 26, 2024 at her Andalusia, AL home after a multi-year battle with an aggressive form of dementia. Julia was the daughter of the late Earnest and Syble (Inabinett) Goolsby of Opp, AL and was also preceded in death by her sister, Diana Goolsby Blocker and numerous relations. She is survived by her husband, Raymond Holmes; daughter, Amy (husband, Christopher Johnson); grandson, Cameron, and other extended family members.

Julia spent her childhood in Dade City, FL; graduated from Straughn High School in Andalusia, AL; received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Troy University; and earned her doctorate at The University of Alabama. A lifelong educator, Julia served in the Alabama and Florida public schools as a classroom teacher and instructional coach; as the Director of Weekday Ministries and Concord Christian School at First Baptist Church Concord in Knoxville, TN; and as a university professor at East Tennessee State University, Johnson University, and Milligan University in Northeast Tennessee. A strong woman of faith, she also served in her local churches teaching Sunday School classes, working in children’s ministry in multiple capacities, and supporting missions work around the world. She treasured the many friendships formed throughout her life and especially loved re-connecting and keeping in touch with former students, classmates, and colleagues.

Although Julia retired from her career in education to take care of her parents until they both succumbed to dementia, she never quit teaching. In her last years, her greatest joy was spending time with her grandson Cameron, reading to him until her cognition declined and their roles reversed. Even after the loss of intelligible language, Julia continued to “teach” from her wheelchair, using her tray as a desk to do “creative writing” and “reading” children’s literature to her caregivers and family.

Details regarding a celebration of life service for Julia will be announced at a later date. For those wishing to do so, donations in her memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Milligan University’s School of Social Sciences & Education.

Opinion | America is aging into a crisis that we knew was coming 08/25/2024

More than 8 million Americans don’t receive the help they need. That number is only increasing. The most recent warning came courtesy of a report earlier this month by the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at The New School. According to its calculations, in 2020, about 20 million Americans ages 55 and up needed assistance with daily tasks essential to living independently, from preparing meals to using the toilet. But almost 40% of those people — more than 8 million Americans -- receive no help at all. Those who can’t get the help they need are at much greater risk of injury, disability and death. https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/americas-elder-care-crisis-re-not-ready-rcna129848

The family may es**rt you to the casket, or you might approach on your own. Viewing the deceased is not mandatory, however, and you should do what is comfortable to you.

Funeral Etiquette

What to Do at a Funeral

While at a funeral, be attentive of what’s expected of you. If the family gives any instructions, quietly follow them. The day is about them and the deceased, so guests should make things run as smoothly as possible. It is completely understandable if you cry. Funerals are for paying your respects to the deceased after all. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, it is okay to quietly dismiss yourself from the service so long as you don’t draw attention to yourself. Be sure to avoid any possible distractions. This includes turning your phone off or on silent and leaving it in your pocket or purse during the entire service. Likewise, if you have a persistent cough, bring cough drops to help. If you have young children along, make sure to set expectations ahead of time. Let them know they are expected to be quiet and polite during the funeral. If your child becomes fussy or loud, it is best to take them outside until they calm down.
