Next up for our Break the Stigma Series is Abby Wambach. Abby is a national Soccer Hall of Famer with
two Olympic gold medals, a World Cup Championship, and is the leading goal scorer for U.S. soccer,
male or female. During her career, she struggled with substance abuse, addiction and depression. In her
memoir she writes about her mental health struggles in hopes of reaching others in their struggles.
Wambach said that her substance abuse developed over time and continued to get worse as time went
on. Her “wake up call,” as she calls it was when she was arrested for a DUI in 2016. Leading up to this
event, Wambach had a lot going on in her life including retiring from a sport that had taken up a lot of
her time and was filled with accomplishments and the pressure that those can bring. She has stated
before that, “getting arrested was one of the best things that has ever happened to me.” Wambach has
worked at being sober since that day and uses meditation and running to get through hard days.

This month’s spotlight for the Break the Stima series is Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick is a
Rapper/Songwriter/Record Producer. In 2015, with the release of To Pimp a Butterfly,
Lamar begins to open about his own battles with depression, suicidal thoughts, and
“survivor’s guilt”, in which he explains the battle between where he is from and where his
career has taken him. Kendrick uses music and writing, as most of his songs are
autobiographical, as not only a source of therapy, but also his source of empowering those
who may be experiencing the same struggles. Kendrick is also not afraid to admit that he too has seen a therapist.
Love for all! Happy Pride Month!

This month’s spotlight for the Break the Stigma Series is Terry Bradshaw. Terry Bradshaw is
a four-time Super Bowl champion, two-time Super Bowl MVP, and hall of famer. Bradshaw
was a quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 70’s and 80’s, and currently co-
hosts FOX Sports. Bradshaw has struggled with depression and anxiety throughout his
entire career; feeling the pressure of the stigma around mental health in the NFL, he
suffered frequent anxiety attacks following games. Bradshaw struggled with alcohol and
marital complications until seeking help through therapy and medication in 1999.
Bradshaw continues to bring awareness to athletes and men struggling with mental health.
He also has a book about his battle with depression. Bradshaw continues to encourage
those suffering from mental health to engage one another in their struggles and to find
professional help through therapy and medication.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy Memorial Day!
