Thanks to everyone who supported us over the course of the past academic year! The gallery has been going through some changes, the largest of which is the arrival of our new Curator, Kat Francis! Kat comes to us with previous experience at Silo Arts Studio in Canton and we are very much looking forward to having her join our team at Malone.
It has been my pleasure to curate the Malone Art Gallery over the past few years and I am excited to see the new works and changes Kat will bring to the gallery – fresh with what I'm sure will be some exciting new exhibitions come the fall!
Thank you to all the new friends and artists I've worked with during my time here at Malone, as the gallery wouldn't survive without you!

The final artist participating in our current exhibit is Emily Bartolone. Stemming from her infatuation with the formal elements of painting, the work of Bartolone pairs down simple, anthropomorphized shapes in an effort to explore paint and color theory while simultaneously creating tension and humor through color, edges, and texture. The playful, human qualities of painting are incorporated into the work through the use of amorphous shapes animated within the picture plane. Further informed by ideas of the mundane, the awkward, and the jovial that surround everyday life, the complexity of human relationships are mimicked by the shapes interacting on each painting’s surface. In acknowledging that life is not always cordial, moments of tension are placed within the satisfying surfaces in the form of an abrupt mark, a disparate color, or a shift in scale. These ideas are used to take viewers outside of themselves for a short period of time, hoping to offer a break from the bombardment of distractions, notifications, and news we encounter so often on a daily basis.
'Healing Spaces' opens tomorrow from 5:30–7:00pm! There are a lot of events going on this night, so consider swinging by the gallery on your way to the Jazz, Calypso, and Coffee Night or the Malone Theatre's presentation of The Clockmaker's Daughter!
Enjoy this sneak peak of the exhibition, and consider joining us tomorrow during the reception for snacks, conversation, and fun art!
The photography of Yiyun Chen is about the process of self-reflection and self-discovery as an Asian immigrant, exploring the relationship between people, environment and society, turning its personal experience and empathy into gentle conversations between humans and nature, capturing the poetic and distance of the environment around us. Through photography, we can take the essence of life seriously again and treat the people and things around us tenderly. Through his lens, they often have similar structure, people look tiny in nature scenes, creating an intimate visual experience. Most of his photographs are captured outdoors, with soft light and harmonious colors often used.
Chen is the 3rd artist in our exhibition 'Healing Spaces' – opening this Thursday!
Julie Schenkelberg, the second artist included in our upcoming exhibition 'Healing Spaces', grew up in the post-industrial landscape of Cleveland, Ohio. Her mixed-media installations start with furniture, dishware, textiles, and marble, combined with concrete, resin, and construction materials, to transform notions of domesticity, and engage with the American Rust Belt's legacy of abandonment and decay. Using the home as a playground for formal and conceptual subversions, the work aggressively disrupts cohesion within the physical sphere. Familiar furnishings rekindle memories or premonitions of collapse, suggesting both the utter destruction of war, calamities, or urban decay, but also the uncanny juxtapositions of fragile substances such as cloth and china, with industrial materials such as rusty metal, heavy concrete, and tool-made marks such as drilled holes and chain-sawed indentations.
Our next exhibition, 'Healing Spaces', opens tomorrow! One artist included is Chen Peng. Deriving from a desire to find stillness and grounding as an immigrant, Peng explores the connection between landscape and the complexities of identity and belonging. She creates foreign landscapes from a combination of past experiences, memories, and imagination, delving into the disorienting sense of not knowing where home is. The moon, particularly in its fullness, becomes a symbol encapsulating emotions and metaphors associated with loneliness, reverence, and even terror. Her ceramic pieces extend this exploration of landscapes, featuring textures and marks that convey the essence of mountains, clouds, and the moon.
Today and tomorrow are the last days to stop by the gallery and see 'Common Thread'. Pictured here are the works of Cat Mailloux and Christine Mauersberger whose color palette and interweaving textures pair so nicely together. Stop by between 11am–4pm to see for yourself!
Suzi Hyden describes her artwork as, "celebrating the environment by combining elements from nature and repurposed materials. I use native wildflowers and other objects I find in nature to create my cyanotypes. In addition, I show my love for nature by repurposing materials for my art. I often use vintage fabrics, papers, and metal as the substrates and framing for my cyanotypes. My goal is to give new life to old goods through creative reuse.'
Come enjoy the unique hanging method of these fabric works which are strung from the ceiling with fishing line, giving them the opportunity to sway back and forth in the gallery throughout the day.
Learn a little more about Jo Westfall, one of the four artists in our current exhibition 'Common Thread' through reading what she has to say about her studio practice:
"My visual work is resource art. It is portraiture, fiber art, and assemblage made with local materials that were discarded, overlooked, or unused. It reclaims the aesthetic capacity and utility of these items by integrating them into fresh renderings.
I began to source supplies for my textile work by collecting discarded materials. It fascinates me to reveal surprisingly fibrous qualities in castoff items by manipulating them in woven assemblages. These are worked into wall hangings, as well as wearable designs."
Here you can see the works of three of the artists included in our current show 'Common Thread'. From left to right you see a framed paper weaving from Christine Mauersberger, a large quilt from Cat Mailloux, and two cyanotypes on vintage fabrics from Suzi Hyden. 'Common Thread' is up for viewing until the end of February, so stop by the gallery to see the works in person!
These paper weavings by Cleveland-based artist Christine Mauersberger are delicate and unique. Christine describes her work as, "...aesthetically eclectic. Hard and soft. Digital and analog. Some pieces fill a room, others can be held in your hand. The common thread is that each piece attempts to make the invisible visible." Stop by to see more works like this in our current exhibition 'Common Thread'.
Our current exhibition 'Common Thread' is up until the end of the month. In this show, the textiles based work of artists Cat Mailloux, Christine Mauersberger, Suzi Hyden, and Jo Westfall come together through quilts, cyanotypes, weavings, and more. Stop by Monday through Friday from 11am–4pm!
Tonight's our opening reception for 'Common Thread'! Come on out to the gallery between 6:00–7:30pm to enjoy refreshments, meet some of our artists, and celebrate a beautiful new exhibition arriving to Malone's campus.
Artist Spotlight: Jo Westfall
Westfall is a local artist whose visual work is resource art. It is portraiture, fiber art, and assemblage made with local materials that were discarded, overlooked, or unused. It reclaims the aesthetic capacity and utility of these items by integrating them into fresh renderings.
Artist Spotlight: Christine Mauersberger
Mauersberger is a Cleveland artist who produces complex mark-making narratives in two and three dimensions, from large-scale private and public commissioned works to intimate embroidered pieces. Her process is rooted in the hand-stitching she learned from her mother as a child, reimagined for the internet age: both analog and digital, a reflection of the natural world, and of what man has done to nature.
Artist Spotlight: Cat Mailloux
In a cross-disciplinary practice, Mailloux’s work reaches across drawing, textiles and language to explore the spiritual and the material. Of late, her textile practice is focused in quilt making, pursuing connections between the visual language of churches, cathedrals, and domestic spaces that slowly bleed their way into imagined and limitless landscapes, exploring questions of the infinite through material.
Artist Spotlight: Suzi Hyden
Suzi Hyden's work celebrates the environment by combining elements from nature and repurposed materials to create cyanotypes on vintage fabrics. In doing so, she is showing her love for nature by repurposing materials in her artwork.
Our next exhibition is fast approaching! Please join us in welcoming artists Suzi Hyden, Cat Mailloux, Christine Mauersberger and Jo Westfall to the Malone Art Gallery for 'Common Thread'. Although quite different, all artists in this exhibition are united by the idea of textiles. This exhibition will run from January 11th–February 29th, 2024 with an opening reception on January 18th from 6:00–7:30pm. We hope you can join us!
Artist Spotlight from current 'Works Under $200' Exhibition: David Kruk
David writes of his practice, "This series of work focuses on color paired with lozenge tiling. As a concept, I am interested in mathematical visualizations that may represent some intangible fundamental truth of reality. As a drawing, I enjoy the illusory effects created by these basic building blocks and how they play with our visual perception of orientation and space."

Artist Spotlight from current 'Works Under $200' Exhibition: Clarissa Salyers
Clarissa writes of her practice, "I was born and raised in a small town and moved to the city when I was in high school. My art is what keeps me grounded when things get dark. Art has always been the light in my life. And I want to share that with the world."
