Class on the Spectrum: MayX immerses students in autism community "Autism in the Community" aims to increase the awareness about people who have autism and the jobs available for working with them to build a badly needed workforce.

The month of April is Autism Acceptance Month.

For those who are not familiar with who we are or what we do, let me tell you about Mary Sunshine House (MSH).

MSH Mission
To enrich the lives of adults with autism spectrum disorders by helping them realize their individual potential for self-reliant living, meaningful and productive work, successful social skills and experiences in ongoing physical and emotional growth.

Uniqueness of MSH Program
- Is a private pay 501 (c)(3) non-profit specialized community providing independent living
and life enrichment activities for adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
- Focuses on independent living environments, education, employment development,
socialization, and community integration.
- 24/7 dedicated and trained staff on the premises.
- Free public transportation, Clemson Area Transit (CATbus), with routes including our
campus.
- Provides behavioral health and healthy lifestyles counseling and support.
- Multiple local recreational opportunities for life enrichment includes:
+ A safe, beautiful location in Central, SC, that offers many attractions such as parks,
recreation areas, a disc golf course, a library, museums, and historic sites.
+ Within walking distance to Southern Wesleyan University (SWU) which offers access
to their dining hall, coffee shop, campus life center, gym, golf driving range,
basketball court, tennis courts, volleyball court, soccer field, track and field,
baseball/softball fields, hiking trails, bike trails, chapel, sport events, performing arts
events, and optional class auditing.
+ Optional (but highly encouraged) amenities are social interactions with opportunities
for group discussions, cookouts, game and movie time, meditation, arts & crafts,
relaxation techniques, gardening, and group community outings such as sporting
events and farmer’s markets.

Thanks to the generosity of George and Megan Shinn, they are auctioning, from their personal inventory, a 2012 Ford Mustang. This incredible auction will be held at the Greensboro Auto Auction in North Carolina on April 27th, 2024. All proceeds benefit Mary Sunshine House.

Bray moved into his apartment at Mary Sunshine House (MSH) on March 2nd, 2024. Since Bray has been here, he has been making new friends with the other 3 residents here at MSH. He has a passion for model trains. His goals that he would like to get a job, learn how to budget, and make new friends.

Aaron moved into Mary Sunshine House (MSH) on December 2nd, 2023. Aaron, we are so glad that you are here with us. Aaron made some wonderful progress since he has been with us at MSH. Aaron has done an amazing job keeping his apartment clean, doing incredible work at his job, building up friendships, exploring his surrounding community, and has improved on his daily living skills.

We are so proud of you, Aaron!

Zach moved into Mary Sunshine House on November 15th, 2023. Zach has achieved so much since he has been here at Mary Sunshine House. He has made new friends, started a new job today, interacting in his surrounding areas like going to Sothern Wesleyan University, taking care of his own apartment, and improving on daily life skills. Welcome home, Zach!
