Today we had our first blood drive at PTI. We began at 1 this afternoon and still going strong. The class stepped up to the challenge and surpassed our goal. Great job………
Class 24-03 had their first uniform inspections and integrated scenario. I think they were a little nervous but worked their way through them.
This morning, BLE class 24-03 was proud to participate in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Memorial Stadium. Shout out to U of I Navy ROTC and IFSI for the opportunity.

Meet Gracie!!
Gracie is often referred to as the PTI class mascot or the actual assistant director... she has been welcoming recruit classes for several years! They say animals have a sixth sense, well hers is knowing when the recruits are released on a break, because she heads to the doorway waiting from them to come out.
Class 24-02 has almost completed Week 3 of 16! There were a lot of “firsts” this week, including uniform inspections and an introduction to facing movements, moving into their 1st integrated scenario where they apply what they learned in the classroom to a scenario setting, followed up with a writing lab to assist them in completing their first police report. Despite being extremely nervous about the scenarios, they all did a good job with the first one.
Today PTI class 24-02 participated in the 2024 Police Memorial ceremonies for the City of Champaign and Champaign County. It is important that new recruit officers not only understand the basics of Law Enforcement but also the traditions associated with the profession. Honoring and paying tribute to officers around the country who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty is one of them. The class was proud to have attended and did an outstanding job representing all agencies around the State of Illinois, as well as PTI.
*Calling all PTI Alumni and Facebook friends!*
As you may know, the Police Training Institute (PTI), established in 1955, is Illinois' longest-serving police academy. While PTI provides top-tier police training in the state, our facilities urgently need improvements. PTI has outlined a three-phase facility consolidation plan that will eventually centralize all training at the Tactical Training Center (Range) on Curtis Road. The first phase is estimated to cost 4.5 million dollars. To fund this initiative, PTI is pursuing an internal loan from the university, as well as state and federal grants. We've also established an account with the University of Illinois Foundation for private donations. We sincerely thank you for your continuous support of PTI. Please take a moment to review the facility consolidation plan and visit our 'Donate Now' page for more information on how you can help PTI achieve this goal.

PTI would like to congratulate Meg Hedrick on her retirement from PTI after 28 years of service! Meg was instrumental to the organization, handling all of the duties from registration to scheduling and everything in between. She is known by many agencies across the state of Illinois as “Meg from PTI” from her years of speaking with agency representatives on the phone. She will be truly missed not only by police departments, but the staff at the academy! Congratulations, Meg!! Enjoy your retirement!

PTI Update from Director Michael Schlosser -
It is with mixed feelings that I am announcing my retirement from the University of Illinois Police Training Institute. I began working for PTI as an academic-hourly in 1998 and upon my retirement from the Rantoul Police Department, I began my career as a Police Training Specialist at PTI, teaching virtually everything offered at PTI. The exception would be Fi****ms, as most of you know. This was a very rewarding time; however, I have enjoyed nothing more than my position as Director of PTI. PTI’s full-time staff and the 100+ dedicated academic-hourly employees are truly the backbone of PTI and why we have had such great success. I am proud of all of the PTI staff and honored to have worked with them. Because of them, I have peace of mind, knowing the great training will continue.
I have had the opportunity to have two careers that I loved every minute of. The feeling of being a police officer where I was able to interact with my community and make a difference, was extremely rewarding. Probably the most rewarding aspect of my job at PTI has been knowing that we, as a team, have made a positive impact on our future police officers.
So, I’m sure some of you are wondering why I have chosen to retire. It’s pretty simple. My wife of 42 years, Kim, is now retired after 35 years of teaching. I plan on spending more time with her, my three children, our three grandchildren, ages 10, 7, and 6 months, and my mom.
I plan on finishing the current class and retiring May 1st.
Mike
PTI hopes everyone has a safe and happy Fourth!
Today we honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation…Thank you.
Exciting things happening at PTI!
