This robotics season is an exciting time for The Flyers! 60269A is all about change this year. Tessa Jordan returns to continue A team’s legacy, with the addition of Charlie Swain from B team, and new team member Taylor Neal. With this new team, comes a whole new robotics class moving from VEX IQ to VEX VRC! New robots, new competition, new team, but the same amazing coaches!

The Flyers competed in their very first VRC competition on February 1st, and they went ready to win! The Flyers placed 3rd overall in teamwork and 2nd in skills. Fun fact…the semifinals were made up of an all Sissonville group of kids. What a great testament to our community!

The Flyers had an amazing night by bringing home the Excellence Award! This is the highest award presented at any VEX Robotics Competition. This extraordinary night, qualified The Flyers for the state competition next month! Not bad for their first competition! Keep up the amazing work!

Thanks to DuPont Middle School for hosting The ‘Blizzard Bot Battle’ KCS VRC Competition.

And that’s a wrap! These kids have put in countless hours over the last 8 months and today, their hard work paid off!

There are 10 different divisions at Worlds. Each division has roughly around 80 teams total. The top 20 teams in each division, move on to finals. Then, the top ranked team in each division compete for the world title. Each year going in, The Flyers know they can’t compete at a level that will take them down to the very last 5 matches. However, they do know that if all goes well during their division matches, then there is an opportunity for them to at least make the division finals and/or win an award.

These kids had one more chance to get the recognition that they have deserved and hoped to achieve for so long. Out of 79 teams in their division, they finished in 28th place. They were 8 spots shy of making it to division finals. Overall, there were 710 teams in the running for skills. The Flyers finished in 294th place. However, walking away with one of the awards offered at the World Championship, is a victory in itself.

The Flyers were awarded the Innovate Award. This award is technically the 3rd highest award in robotics; however, since only one Excellence Award is awarded at Worlds, the Innovate Award is considered the 2nd highest award that a team can achieve in each division.

VEX defines the The Innovate Award as:

“An award that is presented to a team that has demonstrated a strong combination of ingenuity and innovation in designing their VEX robot. This award will typically recognize a specific, unique piece of engineering that exemplifies thinking outside of the box and innovative engineering design. The Innovate Award recognizes an effective and well documented design process. The team who earns the Innovate Award should be among the top contenders for the Design Award.”

Congratulations to Abby, Greyson, Tessa, and Charlie! Thank you to the coaches, each and every sponsor, family member, and fan of The Flyers! Your support over the years, is what made all of this possible. What an accomplishment for a wonderful and deserving group of kids. A goal was set and it was achieved! 👏🏻

05/02/2023

From the beginning of the season, the kids had one goal in mind. Their goal was to make it back to Dallas to compete at the World Championship one last time as a team and at least walk away with an award. And that’s exactly what they did!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 For the first time ever at Worlds, The Flyers walked away with the Innovate Award!!! Congratulations Abby, Greyson, Tessa, & Charlie! A detailed update will soon follow.

First picture is the top two ranked teams in WV. The Darth Vexers from St. Joseph Catholic Vex Robotics (1st) and The Flyers (2nd). Both teams are in the same division this year; however, they won’t have the opportunity to work together as a team. It’s a shame because when these two teams are paired together for a match, they are one heck of an alliance!

Second picture is all of the middle school teams that are representing the state of WV at the 2023 World Championship!

The Flyers have arrived in Dallas, TX for 2023 VEX Robotics World Championship and are proud to be representing their wild and wonderful home state of WV! The team spent day 1 getting checked in, setting up their pit, and having their robot inspected. Today kicked off qualification matches in each of the 10 divisions. The remaining matches will pick up tomorrow on day 3, with awards to follow.

Thank you to all sponsors! This trip never would have been possible without your help. The Flyers are so grateful for the love and support from everyone since the very beginning. The outpouring of donations from companies, locally owned businesses in the Sissonville/ Charleston area, and from friends and family over the years, has been overwhelming.

Stay tuned for updates! Let’s go get ‘em! 👊🏻

Last weekend, The Flyers went up against the best teams in the state by competing in the 2023 VIQC Middle School West Virginia State Championship. A Team made it to the teamwork finals and was teamed up with the same team that they won the state championship with last year, St. Joseph’s Darth Vexers. However, during the final match of the day, A Team’s robot got jammed and with it not being able to shoot discs, it cost the girls significant points in the end. Therefore, this amazing alliance fell short of claiming their state title once again.
A Team placed 3rd overall, but their phenomenal engineering notebook won them the Design Award.
B Team just missed the cut off and didn’t get to compete in the final matches. However, their robot gained the attention of the judges and the team was awarded the Build Award.

Out of 30 teams competing in Skills, A Team finished out the day in 4th place and B Team finished in 9th place.

Both A & B Teams for the middle school division, as well as C & E Teams from their sister team The Flinn Flyers for the elementary division, qualified for 2023 World Championship to be held in Dallas, TX, the first week of May.
Following a period of reflection, B Team, C Team, & E Team, have made the decision to not make the trip to Dallas.
With that being said, to even qualify for worlds is amazing in itself. There are 5,748 elementary VEX IQ teams in the world. Only 14% of those teams are invited to compete at worlds. And two of Flinn’s first year teams consisting of 4th graders, are in that 14%.
There are 4,641 middle school VEX IQ teams in the world. Only 17% of those teams are invited to compete at worlds. A & B Teams are two in that 17%.

B Team has had a remarkable season filled with numerous, well deserved awards. The Judges Award they won at the Kalahari Classic is a big deal in the R.E.C. world of robotics and there were teams that placed ahead of them that day, that didn’t win an award. Winning the Build Award last weekend at states, is confirmation that this team gained some attention this season and were recognized for their achievements.

A Team has decided to make the trip to Dallas one more time. Tessa still has one more year of middle school and can continue to compete at this level if she chooses to do so. However, this is it for Abby and Greyson and they want to make it count. So, the 3 of them are all in 100%, one more time as team 60269A. It has also been decided that A Team needs a back up driver. Another driver to make the trip with them to Dallas and assist in driving if need be. Based off of his scores this past season and his ability to work well under pressure, the team decided to invite B Team member, Charlie Swain to attend Dallas with them.

Congratulations to all the teams for all of their hard work and dedication this season. Good luck to A Team in Dallas! Stay tuned….
