HealthLinks Magazine wanted to know what doctors wish we all knew and C&B's Cindy Carter Ph.D. responded..."A helpful approach for people to consider improving mental well-being is bibliotherapy. There are many resources available that can aid in improving how you think about things. Selecting material from reliable, research-based sources is essential. The American Psychological Association can be a helpful starting place."

The area of cognitive behavioral therapy targeting trauma exposure and the psychological difficulties that result (e.g., the development of posttraumatic stress disorder), is well researched and many effective treatments have been developed and refined.
This article, from the American Psychological Association, does a nice job summarizing the various evidence-based treatments, both psychotherapy and medication, for those who suffering following exposure to traumatic events:
Treatments for PTSD Four therapeutic interventions are strongly recommended, all of which are variations of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Three therapies and four medications received conditional recommendations.

Want to help kids struggling with ADHD? Don’t miss this article about the key feature emotional dysregulation plays for kids with ADHD in the American Psychological Association’s monthly publication. Ineffectively modulating or regulating emotions is something everyone may experience from time to time, but new research suggests difficulty with managing strong emotions plays a significant role in the impairment experienced by some children with ADHD. Behavioral interventions, in addition to medication, can help children with ADHD better understand their strong emotions and break the cycle of overreacting to those feelings which can account for lower self-confidence and overblown conflict with parents and peers.

Read on for one of our Directors' feedback on this article by APA on reducing loneliness. Let us know your thoughts!
Check out this article in the American Psychological Association’s monthly member publication. It highlights the benefits of engaging in cross-generational interactions. Creating opportunities for younger community members to engage with older community members harkens back to a time when people lived in small villages and crossed path with family and neighbors of all ages, all day long. Our modern world has taken us away from such basic human interactions. It would be amazing to be able to reduce loneliness by connecting generations!

Generations unite to address loneliness, climate change, other global challenges Interactions between different generations are far less common today than in the past, but increasing those connections has the potential to impact some of society’s most intractable problems.
Here’s what our LPC-As had to say about their recent participation in the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies’ recent workshop by world-renowned child psychologist Dr. Phillip Kendall:
Treating Anxiety in Children and Adolescents: Clinical Strategies within Empirically Supported Procedures
“Dr. Kendall is an engaging speaker and I appreciated all of the examples he gave of how to use the strategies he discussed. The workshop gave me a good overview of how to approach treating anxiety in adolescents as well as specific activities I can use with clients.” Haley Pasquale, M.S., LPC-A.
“The workshop on treating anxiety in adolescents was informative and exciting! Dr. Kendall was enthusiastic in his discussion on how clinicians can better treat youth navigating anxiety. As a clinician, I learned the importance of modeling coping behavior and utilizing various techniques to assist children in developing skills that best serve their symptoms. I look forward to utilizing these techniques and better serving my clients.” Bradley Burris, M.A., LPC-A.
Counseling awareness month is a month-long observance of raising awareness and promoting mental health to people of all ages and to honor the contributions of counselors. Thank you to all of our counselors at C&B that truly seek to help our patients improve their quality of life. Just reach out!
Thank you to our Mount Pleasant leaders and child abuse prevention organizations on partnering to raise awareness for National Child Abuse Prevention Month!
“We will literally be putting blue and silver pinwheels in the ground in a garden shape to catch your eye as you’re driving down the road and serve as that reminder that it’s the adults job to take care of children,” Hutchison says. “That whimsical toy that we remember from childhood is truly a symbol of what we want for all of our children.”
