When we have been used to surviving with the bare minimum, any shift can feel too much, and too unsafe. It takes time for our bodies and our hearts to experience that it is safe to expand into our dignity.
Just like how we would not jump into the deep end of the pool when we first start swimming, but we start at the shallow end of the pool, the same logic applies when we “swim” in new relational spaces with others and ourselves. In order to protect our sense of safety, it is important to practice taking up space with people who could celebrate and encourage us to do so first, so that we can build our tolerance and stay the course.
