Our Story
One in five adults in Kanawha County, WV is considered to be functionally illiterate. Since our founding in 1981, Literacy Volunteers of Kanawha County has had one mission: to bring that number to zero. We provide free, confidential tutoring to adults and children in Kanawha County to improve literacy skills. Whether it is learning how to read medication labels, how to sign ones own name, or to speak English for the first time, our dedicated tutors can help.
Tutors are needed as we try to reach more students throughout the Kanawha Valley. They are provided with training and materials, and can chose to work with adults or children. Our tutors provide an invaluable service to the community, and come from all walks of life.
