“EIU is Charleston and Charleston is EIU” This has been said many times. Without one there may not be the other. The Charleston Fire Dept. embraces this fact. We recently were approached by Haley Hoagland, an EIU Honors Student, about partnering with her to complete her Honors Thesis Project. Haley has family that is in the fire service, and she knows that first responder mental health can be an important yet sensitive topic. For her project she developed a Mental Health Tool Kit for our firefighters. This kit included 20-page guide entitled “Resiliency Resources For Firefighters.” This booklet has helpful tips for firefighters to use, to help reduce stress and resources on where to get help if needed. She also made self-care kits for each Charleston Firefighter. The kits have items that will help reduce our stress. She also provided us with 3 books on first responder mental health. The Charleston Fire Department would like to thank Haley for her hard work and dedication to providing our department with great resource.
