International House is thrilled to announce that Maryna Solohub has won this year’s The Journey art exhibit and competition with her piece, title "Defender".
Maryna Solohub is an artist who crochets decorative toys. Maryna was born and raised in Ukraine, but due to the beginning of Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, she was forced to leave her native country and relocate to the USA with her family.
"Defender" features two crocheted dolls symbolizing the fight against the enemy and the desire for peace and freedom. Its design is a blend of military and peaceful elements, showcasing a military uniform scorched by fire, adorned with flowers and traditional Ukrainian ornaments.
This year, we introduced online voting for the first time, and we're delighted to report that we received over 1,500 votes! Meet Jorge Fernández, International House's Major Gifts Officer!
Jorge Fernández benefited from minority student aid at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a B.A. in English Literature. Jorge had the fortune to find a new and exciting opportunity at IH from a friend of both organizations after a successful and gratifying career as WFAE's Major Gift Officer. Taken by the unique work at IH, especially the devoted staff, the international landscape, the education programs and the immigration law clinic, he found the perfect landing spot to continue his fundraising career.
In his free time, Jorge enjoys cinema, reading, music, satire and baking the best Cuban flan in town for friends, colleagues and donors. He's also a fan of professional tennis and his beloved Miami Dolphins.
If you would like to learn more about Jorge, his Cuban culture, and all that he does for International House, we invite you to this month's People of the World Event. We will be meeting on Wednesday, October 16 at the People’s Market from 6:00PM – 7:30PM to learn all about Cuba, their culture, and traditions, while also celebrating all that our local Cuban community brings to Charlotte.
We cannot wait to see you there!!
